How do I get clean URL's working on Bluehost?
This is frustrating.
According to this page…
http://textpattern.com/faq/66/404-error-when-linking-to-article-pages
…Bluehost will run txp with clean URL’s “out of the box.” I passed this recommendation on to my client. But now that she has an account and I have spent the time moving the files and importing the database, it doesn’t work. And Bluehost tech support is no help. Their disappointing response was, there’s a problem with the .htaccess file, and we don’t support .htaccess files.
When I remove the .htaccess file, no problem. But when I add it back in, I get a 404 “file not found” error.
What do I need to do to the .htaccess file to get this site working?

Hmm, write these lines
RewriteEngine On
RewriteRule ^ http://www.textpattern.com [R,L]
in your htaccess file and upload it into your public html directory.
Then try to view your site in a browser. Do you get redirected to the txp site?

Re: How do I get clean URL's working on Bluehost?
Paul,
I did as you suggested, and got a 500 Server Error.
Then I went back into .htaccess and found this:
- File modified on Tue Apr 24 07:23:46 2007 by server
RewriteEngine is not a supported htaccess directive #RewriteEngine On
@RewriteRule ^ http://www.textpattern.com [R,L]
Today is not my day. Textile has totally mangled the code, and I don’t have time to spend figuring it out right now. But I e-mailed you the code, Paul.
Thank you so much for your help.

Re: How do I get clean URL's working on Bluehost?
Ok, that means that URL rewriting ist not allowed now. The AllowOverride directive must be set to “FileInfo”.
If you have access to server configuration files you can change it in httpd.conf file in the htdocs directory. If not — maybe there is a “allow it” option in Bluehost’s configuration control panel?
Otherwise Bluehost has to turn it on. (I had to ask my host for enabling of URL rewriting too; it’s nothing big)
I think you’ll find a solution quicker if you ask the users at the Bluehost supportforum ;)
Cheers.

Re: How do I get clean URL's working on Bluehost?
That’s new. :/
RewriteEngine is not a supported htaccess directive
That means they’ve turned off clean url support (whether intentionally or not – who knows). Go back to them with that error message.

Thanks, Paul and Mary. I wound up ditching Bluehost. Their tech support didn’t know what was going on, and didn’t care to find out. I got the run-around from them via e-mail and phone, then just decided they were a waste of my time. :(
