Displaying the first 100 characters of the <txp:body>

For my current project the article list displays the excerpt. If this is empty, it would be really nice to display the first 100 (or whatever) characters of the body.

Is there a simple way to do this?

I second that plugin – just used it for the first time today – and it is awesome… I never looked at if before because I thought it had something to do with rss feeds :)
