asy_sitemap: strange ranking differences
I realized that on my website, which uses asy_sitemap as the only relevant plugin to this question, a really strange search engine ranking appears.
I use Google Search to find articles on my site as you can see here.
- Now please do me a favor and search for “Projekt 52:52” on 3th.be or just click here.
- Look at the results!
- There is “3th: Archiv” as the first result, which is my archive-page.
- There is “3th: Gemeinsam vs. Zusammen” as the second result, which is no longer valid since this link has been a WP-trackback from inside my blog to inside my blog and I removed this one.
- The article is rather old (December 2005) and can be found here: Projekt 52:52.
So can someone please explain to me, why my archive-page and some trackback has more value to google than the article itself?
(Edit: updated discussion topic. -Mary)

Would this answer your question?

Re: asy_sitemap: strange ranking differences
Uhm, no.
The archive-page exists for about four days now and the article itself for around a year, so chances that there are more links to the article itself are much higher than to the archive-page.
I added meta-tags to the archive page: noindex, follow – let’s see how this influences the results.

Re: asy_sitemap: strange ranking differences
Try removing the meta description on single articles or customize it with txp:excerpt
. Probably add a robots.txt too.

Re: asy_sitemap: strange ranking differences
The CMS you use is irrelevant. It’s all how you markup your pages.
The archive-page exists for about four days now and the article itself for around a year, so chances that there are more links to the article itself are much higher than to the archive-page.
But was it linked to? and where it was linked from, you didn’t have nofollow applied anywhere, did you?

Re: asy_sitemap: strange ranking differences
I know about the CMS-thing. Of course, it’s all in the markup.
Let me ask another way round: I use a sitemap (as I mentioned in the first article). Can this sitemap interfere with the “natural” linkings of my homepage?

No, in fact it should improve it. Try seeing if Google has had crawling problems.
