second life
Did anybody get into second life yet? Not a community but more of a hyper-real jungle. Just wanted to hear views from any of you.

Re: second life
No, not really yet. I already have a second life. And that’s me and my mac-mini.
But the Imagery is quite nice and well designed site.

Re: second life
It’s actually an amazing hyperreality or a simulacrum even.
The site is just the ‘cover’. Download the software and ran it. It’s all open source. A mind blower!

Re: second life
Hmm, I was just in the process of reconfiguring my mac. Hardwareupgrade, wiping out disks, reimport settings, mail folders, prefs, keychains etc and deciding about what to keep and what to throw out in terms of Applications, so I only have what’s absolutely necessary for me.
However you are tempting me, so I’ll put it to my subscriptions for later.
regards, marios

Re: second life
I did read an article on it lately … Mercedes/Chrysler invests a couple of thousands Euros to buy some “space” for promotion… guess on the long run it will be a big shopping mall

Re: second life
It’s a huge shopping mall already. At the mo it has over 5.500.000 users, and over $2.000.000 spent in the last 24 hours (statistics from their home page). It is not its commercial prospects which are interesting to me though. The tools they offer allows users to design the environment which seems to be in a constant flux. There are already big name theoretical architects working in there. There are also spaces belonging to such institutions like Turbulence and the French Ministry of Culture.

Re: second life
Second Life is an interesting place as it allows anyone to build things out of ‘prims’ (shapes), apply textures to them and behaviours via its propriety scripting language.
There is an economy too, which means you can buy and sell what you create, or offer services (escorting being the most popular activity).
Check out http://secondlife.reuters.com to get an idea of the economy.
The result is a mix of commercial, entertainment, artistic and the mondane.
