Nah. For your needs, I would use Blosxom or some derivation (I think there are version written in php, ruby, python, etc.)

Textpattern would work rather well in this situation. Since your front page is PHP based, you could use something like SimplePie to read in the RSS feed from the TxP sections and display them on the front page.

This is what I do on AnalogDigital.org, the feeds are coming all from Textpattern driven sites.
