Sidebar positioning problem
I have a very simple TXP site using a slightly modified version of the Simpla theme.
But there is a CSS problem I can’t track down.
In FF 1.5, I often (but not always) find that the right-side sidebar content loads in the correct horizontal position (ie: to the right of the main content) but below the main content. That is, the top of the sidebar content starts level with the bottom of the main content.
I’ve played with the width of the sidebar – with no change.
I’ve removed bits of the sidebar content (including the Livesearch form) with no change.
- This is not totally consistent. Often reloading the page brings everything up OK (but not always)
- Seems worse on dialup. I’m currently away from home and on dialup, and the problem shows up much more readily.
- My install of FF has minimal extensions.
- The problem does not show up in IE6
- Other FF users report the same symptoms.
- I’m not at all expert in CSS, but can hack away at it, given some guidance. :)
Would value any suggestions/help in resolving this.
Let me know if any more info is required…
Thanks

Re: Sidebar positioning problem
Could you provide a link to one of those pages? I haven’t had it move on the homepage.

Re: Sidebar positioning problem
Thanks jm, but the homepage is the worst offender.
I initially thought it was the box at the top of the sidebar on the homepage, but the other pages (not the members section – that runs on some static php pages) do the same as well.
Not sure what other info/links I can other that would be helpful…

Re: Sidebar positioning problem
Did you ever figure this out? I’m having the same problem with a simpla-based site.

Nope. It’s still doing it, but I have no idea why… IE seems less affected than FF, but I can’t prove that, as such. :-(

Weird, isn’t it? I found some mention of the same problem on Phu Ly’s site that apparently he fixed in a later revision. However, looking at the revised CSS, I can’t see what’s different. I’ve emailed him, so I’ll post it here if he responds with a fix.

Would be very interesting to see what the solution is… Thanks for chasing it up.

Re: Sidebar positioning problem
When it does it again, can you take a screenshot (full page height)? I’ve yet to see it, in the latest Firefox or Camino. What version of Firefox are you running?

Here you go jm:

Using FF 2.0.0.3, but was first evident in the 1.x series.

Re: Sidebar positioning problem
OK Neil, try this. In your stylesheet, take out “display:table” from the “wrap” ID.
I’ve reloaded about 20 times this morning and have yet to get our little problem.

Oooo. Nice job. Seems to work… I think you can uncross your fingers!
Thanks for that! How did you work it out?

Re: Sidebar positioning problem
Well, I never heard from Phu and couldn’t get a message thru to textgarden… So I had an idea and I downloaded both the latest, revised version of the CSS from Phu’s site and the TXP port version and merged them to see the differences. Most differences were just image locations, but that one rule had been taken out. So I gave it a shot.
Lucky break!
