Displaying my own site files?
Greetings,
I am a newbie to TXP and from what I have seen this is a wonderful CMS. Being new though, I have not figured out to get my specific files to render so it is seen on the web. I have figured out how to upload the files to TXP under the admin / files section, but after that I am a little confused. I am anxious to learn about TXP capabilities so any assistance would be appreciated. I checked the TXP Repository, but did not see any specific articles related to my question. If I have overlooked this and someone can direct me to the correct posting I would be most grateful.
Thanks again

I take it that you installed the database?

Re: Displaying my own site files?
You need to first add one of the txp file functions to your page template, such as txp:file_download
or txp:file_download_list
. Only then will your uploaded files be listed on your page.
See the alphabetic tag list for more information on the individual functions.

Re: Displaying my own site files?
Jakob,
I have loaded the database and it is configured correctly. Thank you for the link to the alphabetical tag listing. I understand that I have to put one of the suggested txp file functions in the template, but are you referring to my own page template or the existing template the is standard with TXP when you first configure TXP and click “View Site”? Forgive all the questions Jakob, but I wish to learn about this and you seem very up to date on TXP.
Also, I have file uploaded to TXP and when shoosing “Presentation” then pages, my uploaded pages are not listed as an option for insertion. Is there a step to perform after uploading to get them to appear? Thanks for assisting me with this Jakob, I really appreciate your patience!

In whatever page/form you want it to appear.
Also, I have file uploaded to TXP and when shoosing “Presentation” then pages, my uploaded pages are not listed as an option for insertion.
You can’t upload pages, never could.

Re: Displaying my own site files?
Mary,
Thank you for the reply. Perhaps my terminology is incorrect! As mentioned in the previous post, I am new to this and I see you are one of the developers. TXP is a content management system and I already have content in the form of my website. I would like to utilize Textpattern to assist me in the management of the site as it grows. In the Admin > Preferences section I have entered my site URL and when clicking on the View Site, it does show my web page. What has me confused is does that mean that Textpattern is now managing the site or is is just pointing to that URL much like a link would?
1. Do I need to put each XHTML page that I curently have into Textpattern?
2. Do I need to recreate my CSS style sheet into Textpattern?
3. How do I password protect my clients section of my site with Textpattern?
4. Do the files need to reside in the /textpattern/root directory on my server?
Obviously as you can tell I am a beginner when it comes to Textpattern and have many questions. It would be helpful for me at least if there was a tutorial on how to create, cut and paste and basically manage a site. From what I have seen familiarizing myself with the site, it looks simple enough to navigate, but each section has unique and powerful tools that would enable you to manage a site. My problem is Mary, I don’t know where to start. Any assistance would be appreciated!

Re: Displaying my own site files?
1. yes, if you want to use TXP to manage it, although you’d split the main layout (page/template) from the actual content (articles) in that case.
2. you can, but you don’t have to. If you do, it’s simply a copy/paste operation.
3. see TextBook
4. what files?

Re: Displaying my own site files?
ruud has answered all your questions, if briefly. Textpattern can’t take your existing files and make them manageable by simply uploading them, you need to adapt them. There is some initial effort involved but later it becomes a whole lot easier to manage.
You might find these two articles by Destry Wion a good background primer. They’re long but you’ll have a much better idea of things after reading them:

My problem is Mary…
You’re not the first to say that. ;D
Like Ruud, I don’t understand what you’re referring to for #4.
