Looking for good tutorial on setting up comments.

I am looking for a good tutorial for setting up comments without plug-ins. Just out of the box textpattern comments set up. Any recommendations?

By default, comments should be on and working. What exactly are you looking for?

How to customize really. I just think there should be some information out there dedicated to the topic other than the individual tags in textbook.

I am looking for a good overview and I haven’t found one. I have figured out a bit on my own just playing around, but once again, there seems to be lacking or inconvenient documentation on the issue.

Re: Looking for good tutorial on setting up comments.

Agreed. This is a complicated subject, though. Most people only get to complicated commenting schemes once they’ve got the hang of textpattern’s other features.

What kind of customization are you looking for?

Yes, this is indeed a complicated subject. I have been banging my head against the keyboard many times to get this right.
And the information to get someone up and running is indeed missing from Textbook.

It would be nice to have that added to the Tutorials Section at some point.

regards, marios

Re: Looking for good tutorial on setting up comments.

You need to specify what you’re after before we could even recommend a tutorial in any case. Vague statements like “setting up comments” and “how to customize” could mean anything.

Re: Looking for good tutorial on setting up comments.

I’m guessing he wants to understand how comments works under Textpattern, and was asking if a “grand tour tutorial” was around.

I can understand that, it’s a gray area for some, even if Alex’s FAQ entries did help at the time. The other day, I was looking into why I hadn’t any #cpreview in my forms… couldn’t find the answer…

Re: Looking for good tutorial on setting up comments.

How do I set it up so after submitting comments the comment input is still present, instead of the message of “thank you for adding your comment”.

Re: Looking for good tutorial on setting up comments.

I am having a helluva time getting commenting to work…

I have them turned on, but still get the message “Commenting is closed for this article”… no matter what…

Weird.

Re: Looking for good tutorial on setting up comments.

Can someone post what my forms should look like (the default ones I guess) in order to have comments?

I can fine tune them myself, but having them working is first…

Re: Looking for good tutorial on setting up comments.

In the TextBook you can find the default comments forms.

About setting up comments, I will advice to go slow, step by step, try little changes and revert back if things go wrong.
Read and re-read (because better than to read is to re-read) all the FAQs about comments and all the entries about each tag related to comments in the TextBook.

To avoid things like “Comments closed for this article”, you can do something like:

<txp:if_comments_allowed>
... some tags and text here...
<txp:else />
</txp:if_comments_allowed>

So, if comments aren’t allowed, nothing ouputs.
