organize this..?

hello, I’m making a website for some group which requires some complex organization… on one side I’ll have some parts of the site I thought I would fit in Txp’s sections:
  • about
  • contact
  • activities
problem 1 I want to allow sorting activities by date:
  • old
  • now
  • future
    as well as by kind:
  • fishing
  • horseriding
  • knitting

now, let’s say you started sorting the activities by kind, how do you allow a contextual navigation through the articles according to the way you sorted them?
example: I’m looking at activities > fishing and I want to link to previous or next article accordingly.
when you click on a permalink of a textpattern article you will be redirected to the section the article belongs to. That’s where that article will be displayed. If you click previous or next (assuming you hae links for that) you’ll just go to the according article in that section.

problem 2 some of these articles will be multiple articles. Somewhat like a category of their own; let’s say:
  • knitting
    • design one
    • desing two
so, inside knitting you should have an info page about knitting and then links to the follow-ups. of course you can make a categories scheme just like the one here above category > subcategory > subsubcatgeory. but I have some doubts…
  1. I think that would become unnecessarily complicated for the site to be managed by the owners: for each activity (which would theoretically be an article) you should create a category, then a main info article, and so on.
  2. There might be some navigation problems when you want people just to go through the main info articles of each category without having to go through all the follow ups: I mean you want them to page throught the activities going from knitting to horseriding without having to go through all the designs.
  3. such an über-article/category should be easily archiveable: just move it to old activities and it shall bring all its follw-ups with it.

I’m aware it is possible to figure out various sorts of multiple categorizing scheme. I was considering sorting through the use of tags or custom fields but I still have doubts about their effficency on the field. I know I would remeber to put everything at the right place (guess what: it’s my system) but I clerly see people wondering where the article they just wrote ended up…

any tips..?
help!

what was that again…?
