can't upload file/image - permissions are set to 777

Hi,

My textpattern 4.0.4 install had been running fine. Until now: cannot upload files or images.

I have checked http://textpattern.com/faq/204/problems-uploading-images-or-files

and on my server, permissions for tmp directory are set to 777

~~The only changes I have made in the last 72 hours were the install of vdh_flickr plugin and the creation of a 2nd Publisher account~~

~~any ideas ?~~

Update seems to be an issue with my hosting service as another webapp on another domain of mine is refusing uploads too
