textpattern site development process

Im new to textpattern, curious to learn best practices.
Is it common to build sites locally first then dump the databases and move online
or should i just fire away online from the beginning.
Does it really matter or just personal prefference.

its a bad hen that wont scratch itself.

Re: textpattern site development process

I used to build them locally and when it was finished I moved them to the remote server. But nowadays I just create a subdirectory online and move the site to the root when it’s finished. I put noindex, nofollow for the robots on the page(s), and sometimes also password protect the pages. This way you can easily show your development to your client.

Re: textpattern site development process

I would advise the second way: online first, online last.

A large proportion of the “bug report”, troubles, issues and so on I encounter on these forums are local-Apache related. Because installing and setting up a good Apache environment is a real proper job, and the “do-it-all” pack are bad.

If you know what you are doing, or have a dedicated server with a copycat set-up at home, go nuts locally. Otherwise, do it online; that’s what I do myself (Apache manual and I aren’t quite the best friends).

Re: textpattern site development process

I find XAMPP to be working just fine these days.

Even though I have a dedicated Debian server sitting next to me, I find myself using my local XAMPP install to work on changes to my sites.
