Help with tags being stripped?!?

Hey everyone, I am having a weird problem that I cannot figure out so I wanted to pass it along to the forum and see if you guys may know!

I recently added a PayPal donation button to a site that I am working. I checked the code like 5 times to be sure it was right. When I view the source on the site, or inspect the element in Firebug, the <form> tags are getting stripped off of it.

Any idea why this would happen? I have checked everything that I can think of to check and can’t figure it out.

Any ideas?

Cory

Nothing concrete but I’ve sometimes experienced incorrect source rendering in FF (on Linux) whereas Opera seems to get the source view right. Perhaps you could give Opera a shot if you are running FF?

Also, for the recent ransom I ran, I ended up having to abandon putting the Paypal button in the ransom article’s body and instead put it into a form which I pulled into the article body. Is your PP button in an article body?

Nothing else I can think of right now.

Re: Help with tags being stripped?!?

Trying it in Opera does nothing, I still have the same problem.

The button is placed inside of a form that is then output in another form within the site. I have pretty much ran out of ideas on what it could be. I appreciate your input though Steve, I will continue to troubleshoot the problem.

Re: Help with tags being stripped?!?

FINALLY! I figured it out! I found a forum post about other people having the same problem and they said to the use email version of the generated link instead of the HTML version. For whatever reason, that works like a charm.

It appears as though WordPress users were also having trouble with the <form> tags getting stripped. Weird huh?

Re: Help with tags being stripped?!?

Where were you trying to add it? A page? a form?

Re: Help with tags being stripped?!?

Mary, I had the button inside of a form that was being output inside another form.

I am actually still having the problem though, except now it is with my mem_self_register form instead of the PayPal button. The <form> tags are getting stripped off of it.

We might be able to help if you could show us an example and provide more details.

Re: Help with tags being stripped?!?

Ok, it basically works like this……when you view the source code, the <form> tags are there as they should be. However, when you inspect the element (using Firebug), the form tags are stripped out of the code.

Thus, my mem_self_register form is not working because there is no <form> tags to tell it what to do or where to go. The same thing was happening last night with the PayPal button. The <form> tags were getting stripped off of it so it didn’t work and didn’t know where to redirect to.

I think it may be a JavaScript issue of some kind because the <form> tags are there when you view source but not when you inspect it “live” using Firebug.

Does that make a little more sense? Hopefully I have explained it a little better now! I am still trying to search for a solution.

  • I disabled every plugin in TXP
  • I disabled all JavaScript files that I am currently using on the site
  • I disabled the sIFR text replacement that I am using

Any other possible ideas??

BTW, this is happening on both the server and in a local dev environment.

Re: Help with tags being stripped?!?

If the tags are in the XHTML source, the problem is not with Textpattern. Sounds to me like a problem with Firebug.

It’d help if you could provide a link to an example.

Re: Help with tags being stripped?!?

I think it just may be a JavaScript issue somewhere that is causing them to get stripped. There is alot of custom JavaScript/PHP in the site to allow for file uploads and a form on the front end that will auto create an article on the back end. Something in there, I believe, is causing the issue.

I am going to get it all back up on the server today and I will provide a link for you guys to take a look at it. Maybe fresh eyes on it will reveal the problem.

Re: Help with tags being stripped?!?

Update – I found the problem.

For some reason, there was not ending </form> tag being placed on my Search form so it was stripping the <form> tags off of all of the other forms on the same page

Disabled the Search temporarily and everything works perfectly!
