Alternative way to display excerpts?

I may have gone about this the wrong way – but I’m trying to display articles in two different ways.

Here’s The Setup.

1. I’m using the excerpt field to display a thumbnail of the articles in a list with an offset of “1”.

2. The most recent article is displayed with a shortened message without the thumbnail. When you click on the read more link it takes you to the full article with full-sized image and no thumbnail to be seen.

The problem with that is I’m using the excerpt field for my thumbnails so I can’t create an excerpt with the “read more”.
Is their anyway that I can put all of the desired content into the excerpt field but only call the thumbnail for the list and only call the excerpt text and link for the most recent article feature?

Is there any solution?

Is there a reason you don’t want to use the article image feature (for your thumbnails) instead of your excerpt field?

Call <txp:article_image thumbnail="1" /> in the form you’re using for the list. More info about the tag here.
