There are a couple ways to do it.
If your text is within an article, you can either use the image tag directly within your article excerpt/body, or you can make use of the article image feature.

Ok, just two more questions, and I promise to leave you alone for a while.
I write a test article in the Write subtab of the Content section. To the right of the text area, there are pulldowns under Sort and Display. labeled “Category 1, and Category 2” (even though I have defined 8 Categories in 6 sections) and another for Sections. The lists under both Category boxes have the same 3 options listed from Section 1. (Why?)
No matter what section or Category I assign the article to, they display on the front page, and not where they belong. What am I missing ?

the front page displays recent posts form all sections/categories
The category and section pages display only posts from that section or category
If you want the front page to display only content ‘selected’ by you you have to use a conditional
<txp_if_section name="">
foo
<txp:else />
<txp:article limit="10">
<txp_if_section>Hope it makes sense. Again the tag is in the textbook

Ok, cool, so why do the Category pulldowns on the write subtab show the same options in Category 1 and Category 2 ? And why do the posts only show up on the front page and not in their own sections or categories?

Because you can set up to two categories.

They do. If you haven’t changed your forms/pages/sections any, you are able to click on the title of a given article and are directed to it’s permanent link, within it’s section.
