Questions about Users
Hey everyone, this is my first post here. This seems like a great community! I’m new to Textpattern, and I am building a website that will require a few specific features regarding users of the site.
- I need to allow visitors to sign up to receive news via email. They’ll provide an email address/password, then confirm to sign up.
- The users that have signed up need to be able to log into the site and manage what they’ve subscribed to. At least for right now, that’s all they’ll need to be able to do.
I’m sure this is possible, but I don’t know enough about the inner workings of TxP to know the smartest and most efficient way to go about it. I’ve done a search here and I’ve come across a few plugins that might be related, but I just need to know the best way to accomplish this on a TxP site. So I’m asking the experts.
Thanks for listening.

Re: Questions about Users
Have a look at mem_self_register. I don’t know the plugin but it might do what you want.

There are some example sites that allow this kind of community interaction. FIrstly, there is the Textpattern Resources site which uses the mem_self_register plugin mentioned by Els.
For an example of email subscription you could look at Marios Buttner’s Generico demonstration site (look at the bottom right column — “Subscribe!”) and send him a mail asking about the email newsletter it sends out. I get the feeling it was done with Ben Bruce’s postmaster plugin but I don’t know for sure.
There are some other community sites in the Let’s see yours then section of the forum but I haven’t really used any myself.

Thank you both very much, I’ll get started in that direction. I’m really enjoying textpattern, but there sure is a lot to learn. Glad to have some help!

Some time ago I posted a method to “unify” PHPList with txp.. My tips now reside here . Maybe it will be of help to you…

that looks interesting. Have you compared your experiences with the “unified” TxP/PHPList to using the postmaster plugin? I haven’t used either yet but would like to get a handle on the pros/cons of each method.

Re: Questions about Users
hi steve
We are yet to use the postmaster plugin
NeMe used to maintain an email list which was only using phpList. After about a year 2 things happened:
- We did not send out any emails
- we moved servers (from powweb to textdrive)
In our new locale we decided to drop the newsletter (deleting over 500 subscribers:).
I can say that the pros in using a system which is separate to txp is that it allowed us the freedom to drop it. In the same way it would allow others to drop txp without losing their emal list.
Cons is that you have to maintain 2 installs of 2 different systems.
phpList is a very powerful feature rich program whose only function is the creation of email lists. It allows you to maintain several lists (target markets) separately. All emails from phpList are sent using To: which means that subscribers know which of their email addresses receives the message. Most importantly, it allows them to unsubscribe by just clicking a (unique) link which is embedded in every single email which is sent.
