Plugin help in plugin thread or new topic/thread?

Is it a good idea people post their troubles with various plugins, in the plugins category, but create a new topic, instead of asking in the original plugins topic/thread? Personally I find it annoying…

Re: Plugin help in plugin thread or new topic/thread?

Creating a new thread always runs the risk that it will be missed by the plugin author. I know I subscribe to the threads for my plugins so I can make sure I don’t miss posts.

It also spreads information around which can make it harder for new users of the plugin to find all the relevant goodies.

Re: Plugin help in plugin thread or new topic/thread?

I agree with hakjoon.

Having just one thread is perfect when I’m trying to find all problems that need to be fixed in the next version of a plugin. Keeping track of multiple threads is more time-consuming.

A lot of the things that people ask about turn out to be either bugs or veiled enhancement requests. Those definitely belong in the original plugin thread. And many of the other questions about how to use the plugin can lead to improvements of the help file.

Re: Plugin help in plugin thread or new topic/thread?

I find it annoying for the same reason as you and Patrick. A forum is in its nature a very messy thing, and when people start creating new topics for stuff that should just go into the original thread, all we get is:

1. A messier forum.
2. Dificulty for me as a user to not overlook solutions maybe posted elsewhere than the most logical place I’d look: the original plugin thread.
3. The plugin author may not see the new thread as he is not subscribed to it.

I don’t think people create a new thread to be evil, but because they don’t think about it.

So maybe the forum moderators could put a sticky in the plugins category, directing people to post their plugin trouble in the relevant plugins thread?

Re: Plugin help in plugin thread or new topic/thread?

Raveoli, I totally agree with you. As a plugin user, looking for solutions to possible problems in just one thread is much easier, even if that thread sometimes can get very long ;) And for the plugin writers it must be very annoying indeed to have to expect support questions all over the place…

Edit: this topic should really be in Forum and Website I think.

Unfortunately, PunBB doesn’t support it, otherwise I would merge the new thread into the main one. I’m working on swapping us over to something else.
