help!! - can't get the links to work.....

Hi :)

very new to TXP – but would love to use it as it seems soooo good….

Just went through an old tutorial (http://tp.douglasedmunds.com/) – hoping to figure out what’s been going wrong (been struggling with it for a few days now)… but no luck….

I’ve installed TXP successfully and understand how to add content, change the css etc – but with an added article menu – the links come up with an 404 page error…. rather than showing me what I’m expecting to see….
any ideas anyone…?! – I’m hoping someone can help me along…. could it have something to do with the clean URL – which is the only problem I can seem to fix….? or with the “.htaccess” file (which I have added to the main directory (sitting inside a folder in the root folder of the domain)?

Not sure what else I need to tell you to explain my problem …. I haven’t edited anything really – just trying to figure it all out….
my sample setup (started from scratch this morning ): http://www.graphiceyedea.info/txp_v1/

any thoughts or tips would be greatly appreciated…. :)

Re: help!! - can't get the links to work.....

just read the FAQs once more – and found that I need to use messy URLs for it to work ….

could anyone tell me how I would go about figuring out the right script for my server (servInt – VPS)…. ?
I’m not a programmer (though I wish I had the brain for that) – and so I’m not sure how to figure this one out….?!

Thanks ;)

Your best bet is to start with your hosting company’s tech support. Ask if they can help you with .htaccess and mod_rewrite. If Textpattern’s default .htaccess file doesn’t work out of the box, and the suggestions in the FAQ don’t work, the solution is usually very specific to a particular server.

Re: help!! - can't get the links to work.....

I’ve got a similar problem. I know that if I upload my site to the web server the htaccess file will work and I will get clean URLs. But it doesn’t work on my computer (mac os x) and I want to use clean URLs for development.

my htaccess file looks like that:

DirectoryIndex index.php index.html
Options +FollowSymLinks
RewriteBase /relative/web/path/

<IfModule mod_rewrite.c>
RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{REMOTE_ADDR} !^1\.1\.1\.1$
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ index.htm
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} -f [OR]
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} -d

RewriteRule ^(.+) – [PT,L]
RewriteRule ^(.*) index.php
</IfModule>

#php_value register_globals 0

I also installed zem_rewrite plugin from http://thresholdstate.com/
and I guess I am not doing something right because it didn’t work.

I also opened my httpd.conf.default file and uncommented the 2 rules regarding loading rewrite_engine module.

Does it matter how I define my permanent links in the Admin Preferences?

Help please.
Elle

Thanks – I will try my tech support. Just worried that they will say what they said when I had problems with Wordpress – they’re not supporting 3rd party software….

thanks for getting back to me ;)
