[request] archiving "issues" and "numbers" for zines

hello. i’m transfering a 3-years-old magazine to textpattern. they used to publish the site in simple HTML. i decided to use txp because i’m familiar with it and it’s more accesible for styles and organization than a regular wordpress blog. but i’m having a problem regarding the magazine’s older numbers.

the zine is 3 years old and publishes one or two issues each month (printed and online). how can i organize the articles by issue in TXP? it wouldn’t be easy to make a category for each issue and use a multiple category plug-in, since i would have to create 30 to 40 categories. and these categories will not be used for the new content. it will embrace permanently 10 or 15 articles, and stick as a static publication.

another CMS i’ve been playing with, joomla, has a component (like a plug-in) called ijoomla
the component installs several features for e-zines, such as “feature article” and most important, archiving “issues” of the zine. it creates an archive section, with categories like “issue #1”, “issue #2”, etc. in order to organize articles per batch of publication, so to speak. but you have to pay for it. and i don’t like joomla as much as TXP.

so i’m making a request for a plug-in that can help TXP to improve its functionality toward online publications. a plug-in that helps to archive “issues” and “numbers” of zines. or something like that. contributions ($) for the authors are considered.

any tips in the meantime?

I’m not a frequent visitor of mag sites but couldn’t you have section=issue ?

Re: [request] archiving "issues" and "numbers" for zines

yeah, i could. i thought about it. it works and i might do that in case of emergency, haha. but i’m not sure if it’s the best thing. in the tree structure, each issue (section) would be in the same level as let’s say, about section, contact section, etc. in order to show past issues of zine, another plug-in would be use to separate the sections dedicated to archive issues from about/contact/shop, etc. in other words, to create (or simulate) a section for the sections.

Re: [request] archiving "issues" and "numbers" for zines

I’ve made a Textpattern site for a newspaper which has it’s article archives sorted by issue number. It’s done via custom fields with gbp_permanent_links and some wizardry with the forms and tags.

If you’re interested I can put together some explanation of how it’s done and release the special-custom tags I’ve made for it.

i am indeed interested! :)
is it complicated?

by the way— your newspaper, gairrhydd.com, doesn’t look good in IE 6.0. some images appear broken and i can’t see the whole content for the front page and the articles.

I realize this is a really out-dated post, but…

Graeme if you’re able, could you also let me know about the custom tags you’ve set up? I am trying to do something similar.
