Why does IE 7 add a bogus :// to GET requests?

Since the public release of MS IE 7 I noticed GET requests containing an extra ://, like this (note the GET /article/:// part):

x.x.x.x - - [05/Jan/2007:12:17:01 -0800] "GET /article/:// HTTP/1.1" 200 1615 "http://awasteofwords.com/article/meine-private-google-bombe" "Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 7.0; Windows NT 5.1; .NET CLR 1.1.4322)"

This happens at every resource ending in a single slash, eg. the site root and section or category links…

Two questions:

  • Has anybody else logged such a behaviour?
  • WTF are they expecting to find there?

Re: Why does IE 7 add a bogus :// to GET requests?

I noticed this recently but was not aware of what was causing it. Interesting…..
