Re: Invaluable Textpattern Plugins

First:

Cool!
How does it work? Do I have to click in the arrows? but for what?

Second:

few days ago I was about to start a topic in General Discussion but for some reason (maybe to avoid a large and bizantine discussion but not sure), I finally didn’t.

The topic title/question was going to be: “What does the core team think about this plug-ins?” And, esentially, I was going to list the followings:

The idea behind my question isn’t to discuss if those plug-ins should (or not) be made into the core, but to know what the core team thinks about the functionality added by those plug-ins to TxP. Aslo, what do they think about the reliability, the programming, the security, and other aspects that concerns to those plug-ins.

For example, graeme’s permanent links plugin is a very powerful plug-in that improves TxP handling of URLs far beyond. It is great for some white hat SEO technics and even more human readable URLs.
For me, this plug-in is pure magic.
Maybe the core team (and any other member) have something to say about this or any other plug-in.

Well, sorry if this doesn’t make sense at all, and sorry for my english!

Maybe the core team (and any other member) have something to say about this or any other plug-in.

Most of the time the answer is: we’ve never used the plugin, and know little or nothing about it.

Anything that’s a potential candidate for the core should be submitted as a patch.

Re: Invaluable Textpattern Plugins

If something can be done perfectly as a plugin, then there really is no reason to do include it in core, I think.

Re: Invaluable Textpattern Plugins

Yes there is ;) . A plugin can easily be abandoned, the core is less prone to that.

Side effect as an example: how many dozens and dozens of people said on the forum they weren’t updating their TXP on the last couple release before Mary’s image plugin (which was abandoned once already) was updated too? It’s because their articles are fill with images calling that plugin; if it stops working, the whole site breaks.

On the other hand, it’s the case for very a few, very few of the plugins. And a reason for plugin developers to drop in-article special tag as much as possible. It’s not a reason to bloat the TXP core.

Re: Invaluable Textpattern Plugins

Cool tool, throw in a way to upload plugins and you’ve easily obfuscated the Resources Site. (Urban sprawl, just no avoiding it…alas.)
