[textile] Footnote problem

When I put a footnote code after a period, Textile refuses to turn into a link.

This is the placement I want.¹
fn1. But it doesn’t work.

This is the only thing I can get to work².
fn2. But that is not what I want.

Anybody know how to make it work?
