Weird RSS issues (RSS missing)

Okay, here’s one to gnaw on. A mostly-untinkered-with site – that is, no source changes, no plugins that really take hold of your urls (list below), and when I click on any RSS feed (at the bottom of the home page), I get a “file could not be saved” error in Firefox or a “page could not be displayed” error in IE7. What’s the deal?

Sample RSS feed

Plugins active

  • asy_captcha
  • asy_wondertag
  • hpw_most_popular_articles
  • mrw_spamkeywords_urlcount
  • rss_auto_excerpt
  • rss_suparchive
  • upm_image and upm_imagepopper
  • zem_contact_reborn and zem_contact_lang

Any ideas? Thanks!

Re: Weird RSS issues (RSS missing)

I’m having a similar issue today, and I think Senser has the right idea for the fix here

In my case it has to do with upm_image or image_popper, but I’m I haven’t yet figured out why the error are occuring since I’ve updated the popper plugin to 1.3.1 (newest).

Update:
Actually I just fixed it by making sure I had both the most recent upm_img_popper and upm_image plugins.

I don’t recall having both of these installed before, just the popper. But in any regard this fixed the problem.

Re: Weird RSS issues (RSS missing)

upm_img_popper also contained upm_image in older versions, this plugin was split recently into two. So by updating upm_img_popper you evoked the error message for the now missing upm_image tag, which in turn broke your feed.

Re: Weird RSS issues (RSS missing)

Unfortunately, still have them, after updating to 0.4.5 and 1.3.1

Re: Weird RSS issues (RSS missing)

Then you will have to find the offending tag. The other post suggested wget as a tool to read the feed and the enclosed error messages which cause the feed failure.

Another method to find the article which causes the feed failure would be: Reduce the number articles in feeds to 1 (preferences), see if the feed works. Increase the # of articles in feeds to 2, retry. Repeat until you find the offending article. Then dig for misspelled txp tags. This obviously only works if the error is not inside a page template or elsewhere.

Re: Weird RSS issues (RSS missing)

Very odd. Getting the file directly (well, through Python’s urllib) gives me a well-formed xml doc (no Textpattern errors), but it has lots of linebreaks starting it off – I wouldn’t think that would cause the browser error?

Still digging…

Re: Weird RSS issues (RSS missing)

Yeah – the problem is the preceding linespaces. Such an odd error, I’ve gotten it before once, but in a different area. I can’t seem to get rid of it, trying various ob_clean(), ob_flush() combos, but I still have plenty of whitespace. You can see the trace here

EDIT

Three lines of whitespace precede all of my output, HTML and RSS. What’s the deallio?

Does changing your production mode offer any insight?

Re: Weird RSS issues (RSS missing)

Ah! Got it. It was trailing whitespace on plugin files (in my plugin_cache directory). I deleted it on the live version, but it was still pointing toward the development site. So, a warning to any plugin developers? I think this whitespace might’ve been in the original template files. (not sure / too tired to check).

Thanks everyone for help & suggestions!
