[wiki] wiki: general (css-related) support for older browsers
to make a long story short:
i use an old mac with mozilla 1.21 or explorer 5.17 to work on aswell as watch webpages.
let’s spare the “upgrade to this and that” thingie, please, as i simply (as stupid as it sounds) can’t afford to do so currently.
looking at the wiki pages (alphabetical tag listing -> single tag entries) i encounter the following difficulties:
in mozilla 1.21
…the long tag listing page spills over, everything below the lower screen border shows white, when scrollign there (that’s a mozilla bug, but there’s other websites/wikis which don’t do that on long pages, therefore it must be a css related thing, ergo: there is a cure…
EDIT: css magic in main.css – setting #content{overflow:auto;} to overflow:visible; fixes the display error, but crashes the layout otherwise. any css wizards working on the wiki who could implant this?
explorer mac 5.17 (hate app) behaves much better, but
examples in the individual tag listings don’t show. the div boxes are simply empty, gray. EDIT: this might be related to explorer not displaying content between <pre>..</pre> tags
well, just to let this know to whomever is concerned with that.
i guess, that the necessary modification is probably easy and purely css-related. (i should help maybe?)
- and i don’t think i am the only one having to work on older machines, not to mention large regions of this planet, where people can’t afford buying and/or running the most up-to-date machines and softwares, like 1st world programmers do (i am a 1st world musician ,-)
no one take this as a personal insult, please.
tooooot!
p.s. didn’t try opera…

You still on OS9 by any chance?
I can’t make any promises.
The mediawiki CSS is pretty overly complicated, and it’s just three of us. As much as I would love to support every browser out there the nature of bugs in older browsers just makes that an impossibility.
That’s not to say I’m not willing to make fixes though. I was unclear if the overflow:visible fixed the problem or caused more problems. Let me know and I can see about changing it.

Ok I tried changiing it to overflow:visible and it just messed everything up, so that’s not going to work.

Re: [wiki] wiki: general (css-related) support for older browsers
actually now i can see the content of the examples in mozilla 1.21 on os 9 (yes ,)
- the large page redraw error is still there, don’t worry, if it really hurts to see it, then i can always grab the source and apply my own css locally.-
many thanx for trying, nevertheless, great to be able to access the examples at least.
by any chance: do you happen to know, if there’d be a pdf version of the tag listing with examplkes in a later stage again, like for 4.0.3?
edit1: _it’s as it was before, checked both browsers, sorry for the goof above__
edit2: you might be only three, but i am glad that you guys/girls are there at all! i might be able to help, nevertheless. i’ll fool around with the css a bit and will let you know if i find anythign of value_

Re: [wiki] wiki: general (css-related) support for older browsers
I’m setting up a sandbox area on the wiki server so we can test changes without affecting the main install. That will give us some more freedom to experiment. I’m just being a little slow with it right now because it’s Thanksgiving holiday here in the US so I’m busy with a bunch of family stuff.
I’ll hopefully have all the updates done by this weekend and then we can start working on fixing some of the issues. I’m seeing some things that we could probably change in the CSS that might help some issues.
As far as the PDF goes that was an individual effort, I can’t remember who did it. There isn’t any automatic way to generate a PDF of all the tags that I know of but I’m open to any suggestions.

hakjoon, take any necessary time off!
and: a sandbox area would be wonderful, aswell, but there’s no hurry as far as i am concerned. i work without the wiki since may already. 8-)
i’ll look into the pdf making in the meantime.

jayrope, have you tried iCab? I’m not on a mac, but that’s what Mozilla suggests for OS9 users.

don’t worry further. i researched and found, that certain mozilla versions incl. mine (1.3) have a display bug going with overflow:auto;. i also researched for workarounds, none of of what i found is really working, the best one is the complete removal of overflow:auto;.
this would require a complete page code and css rewrite then. even given, that there is loads of programmers especially, who are favouring mozilla based browsers over explorer (not to cound safari etc.) i would recommend no working on it.
i can always extract source and just change the screen.css to what i desire to be able to read content properly.
thanx for caring, nevertheless.
as mentioned above i can look into making a pdf of the 4.0.4 tags as soons as there’s an up-to-date wiki entry around.
at jm: thanx for suggestion, i had tried icab years ago, liked it, but it was still in development state at that time and didn’t support many normalities of mozilla based browsers or explorer.
tooooot and happy holidays

@ jayrope
You should give iCab 3.0 a try. For page layout (aka css-support) it is equal or better than Gecko based browsers. And it is the fastest browser on that old OS 9 machine I have here.
As for the problem with overflow:auto/hidden and older versions of Mozilla browsers: I think (haven’t looked close to the stylesheet) it is used to contain floated blocks. Alternative: use display:table instead (but not for IE windows) or use the ‘easy clearing’ method. Or even, combine a bit (leaving all as is, just add a bit of code).
If E is the element using overflow:hidden, then just add the following:
E::after {
content:"[.]";
display:block;
visibility:hidden;
height:0;
clear:both /* or left, or right */;
}
And for IE Mac: know bug: setting overflow:auto to any element except a div makes the element collapse to zero height. Hide that one rule from the browser.

Re: [wiki] wiki: general (css-related) support for older browsers
Thanks Philipe I’ll try to take a look at this. The CSS is primarily the great work of david_1cog so I’m not super familiar with it, or the reasoning behind certain rules, so I just need to get a little more acquainted with it. David is getting settled in Australia so he’s not as available as he was before.
Interestingly I never knew overflow:auto could be used to contain floats. I always float the container or use easy clearing. Although in my experience easy clearing tends to still leave a gap for the inserted content’s height even if height is set to 0.

Yes, because overflow:hidden/auto and display:table establish a new block formatting context (see my little exercises on the subject). And in iExploder Windows the same can be achieved when the container ‘hasLayout’. See our long article on the subject.

In recent browsers ? I haven’t had any problems, personally. With older Safari/Gecko, it does happens sometimes. It might depend on the overall construction, however.
Add overflow:hidden to the E::after selector.
