How do databases get corrupt?

Just wondering… what causes damaged tables and can you prevent it? (other than make regular backups of course)

Re: How do databases get corrupt?

Drugs and money :P. No idea, but I try to optimize my tables each time I backup.

Re: How do databases get corrupt?

It would be nice if there was a plugin that makes a backup of the db each time you log out … :)

As a user of shared hosting? You can’t. It’s the job of the people managing the (mysql-)server.

I set up a cron job using automysqlbackup as mentioned by Bert in this thread

It maintains an archive of daily, weekly and monthly db backups – very convenient.

Re: How do databases get corrupt?

Thanks for your replies guys! It’s a pity not every host allows cronjobs, and rss_admin_db_manager doesn’t work with every host. I am now gradually moving my sites to hosts that do offer shell access (because that’s what is needed I suppose?).

Re: How do databases get corrupt?

Els, if you don’t have cron access, phpMyAdmin would be your best bet for backups.

I would go with 2.8.2.4 on the downloads page, the 2.9 series is so new and they are still working out some issues.

Yes, that’s what I’m doing. It’s just that you have to remember to do it…

Re: How do databases get corrupt?

Els,

doesn’t your hosting control panel offers a way to create cron jobs thru a web-based panel?

If you have that option enable, you may combine that with this suggestion by the great hcgtv who knows everything out there in the virtual world.

Re: How do databases get corrupt?

Thanks Maniquí. No, my host(s) for my own site and some of the first sites I made don’t (I didn’t even know then what cron meant, so I didn’t select them for that). I already had a look at Automysqlbackup and I’m sure going to use it where possible :)

Seriously, does no one ever read the FAQ?
