html or textile in post title

I just upgraded my TXP installation. I seem to remember that Textile markup did not work in post titles in the old install & it still doesn’t. But I think that in the past I could use html markup for, say, italics. I just tried both the <cite> tag & the <em> tag in a post title & neither output italic for the book title I wanted as part of my post title. Obviously, I’m missing something.

Re: html or textile in post title

Nope, HTML and Textile are stripped out for the title. You could use CSS, but if it’s for a specific word, you could write a small plugin that finds specific text in the title and surrounds it with em or a span.

Re: html or textile in post title

I’d recommend looking at upm_textile. You could include a snippet like this into your article form: <txp:upm_textile><txp:title /></txp:upm_textile>. Caveat: It won’t look fine in feeds, though.

Re: html or textile in post title

I guess that since I only rarely want to put a book title into a post title, I just won’t worry about it. If the upm tag didn’t mess up in feeds I’d use it. Anyway, thanks for confirming this for me.

Re: html or textile in post title

css on title tag aswell as html markup in article form both work, but admittedly it’s less fun not be able to manipulate a part of the title, only.
should be changed back.

looks like a bug report in Testing to me.

You might also be interested in HTMLized titles and their impacts on feeds. See zem’s paper here, section “The Item element”. It ain’t as simple as it seems.

Re: html or textile in post title

The article title is also used in the <title> tag if you’re on an individual article page. The HTML title element can contain only plain text, no other tags.

Re: html or textile in post title

so idealistically
1. one could use markup freely in titles (and/or textile)
2. this markup needed to be stripped, when preparing article data for rss.

Re: html or textile in post title

Not necessarily.

Imagine a post title like this: “how to include <em> elements in <strong>Textpattern</strong> titles”, where I wanted the <em> tag to be escaped and printed literally, while <strong> should be applied as a true HTML element to emphasize the word Textpattern.

Re: html or textile in post title

i sometimes admire your imagination. (no joke)
nevertheless: “how to include <code><em></code> elements in <strong>Textpattern</strong> titles…”
could work.
i am sorry for i haven’t dug into the news of textile 2 too far yet, probably there’s another textiled way of doing this now.
generally i am just pledging for freedom of design of a title, if helped by textile.
it should be possible to strip tags exclusively for an rss feed, instead of hindering the title to be designed as wished in all kinds of other situations.
