Re: [wiki] Making it easier to get wiki accounts for Textbook?
You should be able to click on the email link on the left here and send me an email. Not sure why that wouldn’t be working.
I went ahead and created an account for you. You should be getting an email from textbook with your temporary password.Let me know if you have any other problems.

Hey hakjoon,
Thanks. I just tried clicking on your email link again. Doesn’t work for me -> “You do not have permission to access this page.”. Maybe it’s just me.
Anyways, I’ve just tested the account at Textbook and it’s working fine. I’ll contribute whenever I have the time now. Thanks again!

Probably an anti-spam measure here in the forum, requiring a minimum number of posts before you can use the email links on the left side.

Hmmm, I can understand that, and it makes sense someone would maybe interact in the forums a bit before diving into wiki contributions (generally speaking), but there’s already been complaints in the past that the wiki accounts requesting process is too problematic (though I don’t agree), so this is not helping matters.
At any rate, we should be clear about this and update the New Accounts page accordingly.

I’ll check with Mary et al. to see if there has been a change. I’ve been getting a decent number of requests so it’s not broken across the board.

I didn’t particularly want to do it, but it can’t be helped. :/
I’ve changed visualdensity’s user group.
What I would suggest is getting the WIKI a contact form, rather than depending upon the forum user mailer. Now, what we could do is have the form working as a forum page here, so only logged in users could use it. Just an “apply for wiki account” form, where you enter your forum password to confirm you want to join, hit send and it emails Patrick with the user’s forum username and email address?
That way, you still have the “protection” of the user being a forum member, but it won’t be affected by the privacy settings for the user emailer.

Will I still be able to contribute (just want to clarify, even if it sounds silly)?

I totally agree that there should be a form somewhere to simplify the process of acquiring access. This would not only benefit the users, but the moderators as well. What about the use of captchas? Would something like this help?

Yes. It means you can now email other forum users.
As far as captcha, that would work if the spammers are bots and not people doing it by hand. I’m not sure which was the culprit at TextBook, only Destry/Patrick might know.

Suggestion:
IMHO, captchas may be implemented to bring automated bots down. It acts as the first filter be it the culprit or not. Then, as for actual people doing it by hand, how about a time-sensitive monitoring of users to remove their accounts if they are inactive for, lets say, 1 year? If they wish to be active again, they’ll need to re-submit their application.
This way, you have a 2-tiered filtering that will your lives much easier. Just my 2 cents anyway.

I’ve no idea what you’re talking about there.

I completely missed the fact that this discussion was still going. I thought Mary was just ignoring an email I sent her :(
If someone wants to discuss ideas of how to do this I’m open to suggestions. Even a pointer to a good secure contact form solution will help, I’ve gotten lazy using zem_contact_reborn.
I’m almost thinking of just pointing people to my contact form and then just doing a forum user verification, before creating the account.
