Why WP? TXP is kick butt! Please advise...
I am tired of WP getting all the fame!
I am pretty active on some general web-dev forums on the net, and from time-to-time a thread pops-up that asks “What CMS/Blog do you use?”… Majority of the folks say “WordPress”. I am typically in a small majority of people that say “TXP”.
Of course, I think all would say “it depends on the job/client requirements”, but I doubt many WP users have tried TXP…
I hate this.
I feel like a lot of folks ask this question at one point in their carrer and the answer they get back from peers is WP… but only because that is what the peers were told when they first asked that question!
I guess what I am trying to ask is this:
1. How do I convince folks that TXP is worth the switch.
2. Is WP as good as they say it is when compared to TXP?
3. Does WP even compare to TXP?
4. How can I help spread the word? I mean, every chance I have I advocate the use of TXP over WP.
Anyway, just had to vent. :)
Keep up the great work TXP folks…
Sidenote: Last cms/blog app I used was Expression Engine… it was pretty frustrating if you are the type of person that likes to build dynamic templates… later I took the time to learn TXP and now there is no turning back. I can’t see how WP could be any better.

- Better, stronger, faster.
- Nope1
- Nope – WP is blog software that can be made into a light CMS. Textpattern is CMS software that can be made into a blog.
- I don’t know, write a few posts about it, put links in your signature — honestly, I don’t know. A few selling points:
- XML style tag templating, far easier than WP’s php templating
- Multiple users
- Textile out of the box
- It’s a CMS! It can be used for a lot of things. Point them to TXP Mag by cat to see the variety of sites that are built with TXP.
- Great support
1 In my experience. I used WP 1.5.x for about 6 months, then switched to TXP. I used 2.x for 15mins, but gave up.

The main reason WP is seeing such a rise in popularity is, in my opinion, because the WP guys made sure it was really super easy to install templates.
TXP doesn’t really have an easy way to install pre-fabs (evidenced by the lack of people really submitting any over on textgarden). I hear tell that the core group is working on this one.

Ah… well, I guess for me I like to build my own templates. I like that TXP is lightweight. I found that setting-up my own template was not much work at all.
Step one: Build static template.
Step two: Plug-in to TXP’s templating engine.
Step three: fine-tune
Something like that I guess. :)
Thanks for feedback Walker, much appreciated.
Hmm, maybe I should just install/test WP for the heck of it… that way I can really formulate an informed response when involved in a “Which blog/cms is better” conversation.
Have a good day,
Cheers,
Micky

Ack! Missed you Jm! Sorry. :)
Great response! Very good idea (did not think to put in my sig)
And good list of why it is better, do you mind if I refer to your list when trying to convice folks it is better?
I had a feeling WP was clunky… that was the problem with EE… I hate code redundancy!
Many thanks for the reply, re-reading and checking out links now.
Have a great day.

I think it’s like comparing Windows to Linux, everybody knows that Linux runs faster on similar hardware and is more secure, but for the most part, everybody just tells their Uncle Bob to run WinXP.
Wordpress is Windows easy, while TXP is Debian geeky. In order for TXP to make some headway, it’s gotta start thinking along the lines of Ubuntu, a nice experience out of the box and one click installs of plugins and themes.
We Love TXP . TXP Themes . TXP Tags . TXP Planet . TXP Make

Hehe, very good points hcgtv. Thanks for the reply.
I actually run XP, but I have always wondered what Linux is like… but then I think about all the apps I have… would they be able to run in a linux environ? I guess that is kinda OT, but heck, I would switch if a linux OS did not slow down my productivity…
In fact, I am one of the few folks that switch from Mac to PC… I guess few switch from PC to Mac… but most Mac users never flop over to the dark side. :)
Never used Debian, but I think I would like it. TXP is great. Exactly what I have been looking for in a CMS when I need a CMS.
Never used Ubuntu either… sounds like a good thing.
Well, either way, I am definitely going to push TXP whenever I can. Hopefully, over time, I will get a few folks headed the TXP direction.
Have a great day,
Cheers,
Micky
