Comment Preview Not Working in IE

My recent comment form journey started here. That problem was fixed, but a new one popped up. I’m hoping this one is something really simple…

Comments worked for over a year without issue, so this would appear to be related to my 4.04 upgrade, my server upgrade, or something involved in the fix to the thread mentioned above. A lot of variables for one week.

Folks using Firefox can submit comments using the standard preview, submit format without issue.

Folks on IE, click preview, see their comment and a submit button, click submit. Then the submit button disappears, their comment disappears from the list of comments, but the text is still in the comment form box.

I ran a tag trace. The strange thing is that the if_comments_preview tag in Firefox, comes back TRUE when previewing comments. Makes sense. The same tag comes back FALSE in IE. Then I noticed that the if_comments_preview information – my conditional formatting for the preview screen – wasn’t coming up in IE, but the submit button was appearing. However, punching the submit button took us back to the default article instead of comment confirmation message.

I have since stripped the comments section of my article page down to:

<txp:comments />
<txp:comments_form />

The problem is still there. Where should I look next?

Thank you.

Re: Comment Preview Not Working in IE

Have you modified the comment input form (comment_form)? The original is here.

Any diagnostic warnings?

Can you post a url?

Re: Comment Preview Not Working in IE

Please post your high level diagnostics. Do you have any plugins, or any php-code that could be doing redirects? Do you have rewrite rules that might be interfering/redirecting? Do you have any browserspecific handling anywhere in your templates/php-code/plugins?

Do you have the exact same problems on the same server with a clean install? (You can try it out in a subdirectory; installing with a tableprefix). It sounds unlikely that this is a textpattern problem at this time, but

Re: Comment Preview Not Working in IE

Got it…

There was an unclosed Div tag in the comment_form. Firefox processed it anyway. IE choked. I don’t know why, but it seems to be fixed now. Sorry for any confusion.

Re: Comment Preview Not Working in IE

A clean install of 4.04 on the same server works fine. The site with the problem has been running clean for a couple of years – until these last few days.

Assuming that you haven’t modded the files of either install, there is two possibilities: either it’s something you placed in the templates – which is very unlikely, given that the browser cannot influence how the PHP is excuted on the server.
That leaves the other posibility, that the problem is client-side. I have left comments with both, IE6 and Firefox on the site you linked to, and did not have any problems. Maybe it’s something specific for those browsers of the users having the problem…?

Can anyone else reading this thread replicate the problem?
