4.04 - Comments Sporadically Slow To Post

Comments being posted to my (newly upgrade to 4.04) website are taking from 30 seconds to 20 minutes to appear. If somebody submits a comment, they go through the standard preview, then submit steps. After submitting, it appears on the confirmation page as the most recent comment. Then, when the submitter goes back to the homepage, the comment effectively disappears – for a while. The comment counts on the homepage are delayed, but not necessarily on the same ‘schedule’ as the comments themselves. So on the homepage, we may find an article with “Comment [4]”, but when we enter the article we may find six comments. Twenty minutes later, the comment count updates to six. Other times, we may see a comment count of 5, and then click on the article to find 4 comments. 1 to 20 minutes later the missing comment appears. My comments have worked fine for a couple years now.

Here’s the rest of the story:

  • About a day after upgrading to 4.04, I migrated my website from one of the Textdrive’s original shared servers to a Textdrive business server. The speed of the site jumped significantly, but this comment delay appeared. The delay may have been there before the upgrade, but very few people commented and nobody complained.
  • I’m using a couple of comment plugins (ajw_comment_alt and ajw_comment_num). However, after turning these off and removing the code from the form, the delay still persists.
  • I replaced all the comment forms and calls with the default Textpattern install and the delay continues.
  • I’ve submitted comments and checked the mySQL textpattern table for “comment count” and it reflects the true comment count even if the homepage doesn’t and even when all the comments aren’t displaying.
  • I’ve tried removing the comment spam blacklist to see if that was the holdup, but the delay still persists.
  • Textpattern diagnostics come back clean. If anybody wants to see it, I can post it here.
  • I manually compared the revision numbers and MD5 checksum against those published on this site.
  • Generally speaking, comment count on the homepage corrects itself before the actually comment appears in the article.

Any suggestions for places to look next?

If you want to try submitting comments and seeing the delay (although it’ll probably work for you) go here.

If you have any questions, send them my way.

Thank you.

Try temporarily emptying the “Spam blacklists” setting in admin > prefs > advanced.

I tried that before, but I’ll try it again. The spam blacklist is now blank.

In advanced preferences, what is:

New comment means site updated?

set to? At this point this affects feeds and the sending of 304 Last-Modified Headers on the site. This may not be desirable. You can turn off Sending the Last_modified headers completely in preferences, and revert to 4.0.3 behaviour.

Re: 4.04 - Comments Sporadically Slow To Post

New comment means site updated?

This is set to “no”.

Changing the Send Last Modified Headers to no appears to have fixed the original problem. I’ll keep an eye on the site to see if anything else changes.

Thank you very much.

Thank you. Checked and confirmed. It would appear that my textdrive server would also be having this problem. Well, it functionally works now – sans caching.
