Importing - I must be missing something.

I brought up the TXP importer and filled in the db data. But, how does it know where the db and site is? (It’s on another webhost)
The importer didn’t ask for a URL of the WP site.

Thanks..

When you select b2, wordpress, or MySQL on the importer page, textpattern 4.0.4 should bring up a the proper fields allowing you to specify db location and other options.

Re: Importing - I must be missing something.

I’m just wondering, does both sites have to be on the same server for the import feature to work?

My WP site is on a completely different webhost than Textpattern and I don’t see how the TXP importer knows where the WP site is.

Re: Importing - I must be missing something.

Nope, they don’t have to be on the same server.

Select Import From “Wordpress”
In the fields that appear put:

Section to import into: Select the section
Default article status: Set the default status of imported articles
Default comments invite: Set the default comment invite

Database name: Set the db name
Mysql user: set the db user
Mysql password: set the db password
Mysql host: set the db host (can be another server, but server must be accessible from remote host – machine running textpattern)
Tables prefix (if any): if you have a prefix on your wordpress tables, put it here.

Re: Importing - I must be missing something.

I wonder if the Mysql host is wrong? I’m using localhost. Should I be using something else here? how do I make it a remote host? I keep getting an error message about a wrong host.

(The WP source is on a different webhost)

Thanks..

Re: Importing - I must be missing something.

YOu have to enter the hostname of the remote DB. Most hosts however will not allow you to make remote connections from outside, and hence there is no hostname that can be used from the outside. “localhost” is a shorthand for “use the same IP where the webserver/php is running on”.

Your best bet is to export the tables from the old host (using something like phpmyadmin), and then reimport them into the DB at the new host.

OK Sencer, got it, I see now. Yes, I’ve exported many db’s in WP. I’ll give that a try.

Thanks..

Re: Importing - I must be missing something.

I don’t know if I did this in a round about way but it worked perfectly. It may help someone so here’s the procedure.

1. Made a temp Mysql db on the same server as Textpattern.
2. Went to my other webhost with Wordpress and made a SQL backup file to my computer.
3. Went to the TXP host and uploaded the WP SQL backup into the temp DB.
4. Went to Textpattern and did the import.
5. Went back to the WP host and deleted the temp Mysql db.

Thanks Sencer and Walker for the tips.
