FWIW: PHP version warning 4.3.10 [sigh]

This is almost an aside; my usually excellent host pair.com seems obsessed with sticking with PHP v4.3.10 which, on Textpattern 4.0.4 and a few other apps (such as Gallery), gives me warnings like this:

“Your version of PHP has security related risks. Please turn register_globals off or update to a newer PHP version.”

I know precious little about PHP, but I know a warning. How serious I don’t know. However, I’ve raised another support ticket (as I did when Gallery 2 flagged it), except this time, I think I’ll keep pushing. If anyone has info on this notice, if you could let me know, that would be great, but for now, as the title says, just FWIW.

Also FWIW, 4.0.4 seems to be fantastic – thus far a painless upgrade ;)

Try adding the following line at the beginning of your .htaccess file to disable the warning (and register_globals):

php_flag register_globals off

I’m also still using PHP 4.3.10 on my server. Mainly because that’s what Debian is using in their current stable distro. Nothing wrong with that as security fixes can be (and probably are) backported without bumping the version number.

I’m also running PHP 4.3.10-16 on my VPS, it’s what Debian stable is running and it works just fine.

When Etch comes out then we can all upgrade to either 4.4.2 or 5.1.6, I think I’m going to go towards PHP5 myself.

Thanks for the replies. Ruud, Pair came back with the following:

“You can normally put custom PHP
values in a .htaccess file in your web directory (unless you are using
php-cgiwrap). .htaccess is a plain text file. To use custom values will
look like this:

php_value allow_call_time_pass_reference 1
php_value magic_quotes_gpc 1”

I’ll give it a try!
