Google Code Search

Hi all,

I’ve just been reading about this new service from Google to search code.

From what I understand, this now means all config.php files inside textpattern directories are now freely available and viewable from a Google search – meaning anyone with a bit of savvy has access to passwords for MySQL installations connected with Textpattern sites.

Am I understaning this correctly? How do we get around it?

Naturally I have a robots.txt file the disallows access to the textpattern directory. Does textpattern work if I move the textpattern directory outside of the public folder on the server?

cheers,
LP

Re: Google Code Search

Hi Luke,

Google Code Search just indexes Open Source projects, It doesn’t go into people’s installs and crawl into there. I’ve been playing with it and it works pretty good, wonder what the people at Krugle are thinking about at this time?

Re: Google Code Search

It’s impossible for Google to index pre-parsed PHP files. It’s possible for it to do it only with code in projects hosted by Google, as Google then has access to that information (just like you can open up your config.php file on your own computer and read its contents). Don’t worry, you’re not any less secure now then you were before – if you were, a hell of a lot of people would be suing right about now… :)
