[wiki] Textbook's main page

Textbook is a valuable asset to the Textpattern community, the better the documentation looks and feels, the more inclined a user is to take the leap into and stay with a software product.

After using Textbook for the last few months, I feel the main page should start off with the English docs and the side menu take you to the International portal. I’m not being a language bigot, I just feel that the English docs are more complete and if a user wants to default to French let’s say, then maybe a cookie can be set for them.

On this main English page, should be links to the most important pages a user might need to go to and there should always be a way to get back to the top, no matter what section you’re on. Lacking breadcrumbs, if you dig in, let’s say you go to tags, you lose the ability to get back to the beginning.

The Wordpress Codex site is a good example of what I’m talking about.

I started TextBook near two years ago, and these debates come and go:

The homepage started out as a table of contents that mapped the wiki into manual chapters. This had merit, but few people contributed anything (as few people do now) so some time after I held a no-holds barred bitch session to find out how to improve things to people’s liking. This was a long, lively debate that lead to changing the home page to this, which as you can see still exists, and is quite similar to the WP Codex, which most are quite aware of.

But then some more time went by and the international crowd felt the wiki was too English-centric; they wanted justice and demanded fair top attention so the whole main page issue was hashed-out again and we resulted in what you see now.

Hence, what you’re suggesting is actually going backwards, and speaking for myself, I’m not interested in going backwards and rehashing old wars. Further, I like supporting the international front, I think it’s fine, though I would like to see more international representation to justify it. I agree on that much. What you are suggesting about having key info on the home page is essentially what the English section of the home page is already attempting to do, just no so broad in scope like the codex. The idea now is to determine what should be major access points to subcontent and make those access points the starting links. These are essentially subindexes to categorical content. This makes it inherently easy to implement more breadcrumb links.

My work activities have changed significantly recently so I’m going to be stepping down as TextBook’s so-called lead. Hakjoon and david_1cog, in that order, will be in the positions to take over, but I’ll leave that to their own interests. In any case, TextBook can change/revert to however the community likes. Someone besides myself will just have to actually make the changes.

I’ve bookmarked the En/Main_Page, I’ll use this to gain entry to the Wiki.

But it’s alright now, I’ve learned my lesson well

Ah, but the story’s not over yet. ;) You’ll want to see this thread too, which basically argues why that en/Main_Page is no longer being supported in terms of links. But again, what directions new wiki leaders choose in the future remains to be seen.

Amen to that.

We won’t rush into anything until I’ve had a chance to talk with hakjoon properly, which won’t be until after he’s off the streets (so possibly after October), but regardless, I’ll still have an interest in helping with TextBook from a less demanding position. A little writing and editing here and there will suit me fine, but as for serving as lead or decision maker, it’s time for me to hand that baton someone else. As indicated, Pat and David are in positions 1 and 2 at the moment. (When the time comes, this forum will need a new moderator too.)
