Article status - Draft, hidden, pending, etc...
Honest to god that I look for this info everywhere before asking!
What exactly is the difference between Draft, hidden and pending? I know what Live and Sticky are.
How do I preview an article before going live? (shouldn’t there be a preview button? surely!)
To set an article to publish in the future I need to set the date/time and have it’s status set to live?
Thanks in advance and forgive me if I’m asking the obvious.

There is information about article status at the Textbook.
To preview your article click on the “preview” tab located to the right of the body portion of the article entry area. The article I linked to above has a pretty good introduction to this section of the Textpattern backend.

Thanks for the links. I’ll read through them thoroughly.
I don’t get any tabs on the right of the body text area, both in IE and FireFox.
Also, does the preview only show what’s in the body area or the whole page as it would look like when published?

Make sure you have all the images uploaded to /textpattern/txp-img (img something). Take a look at the TXP posting screenshot to see the images. The preview shows the article formatting, but not in the context of your site design—just in terms of Textile formatting basically.

That’s no good to me. My pages are made up of default content (title, body) and 9/10 custom fields holding other text and pics… all coming together in a fairly complex layout.
Perhaps I should create a section called ‘Staging’ and publish there (making sure that no links are generated to staged content) and then switch section when I’m ready.

It would be nice to do have a live preview. A status that made the article accessible by url, but didn’t include it on the site in any other way.

You can do that by creating a section for that purpose and password protecting it with ign_password_protect. That’s what I do for my own site, and it works perfectly. Once I’m satisfied with what my article looks like, I change the article section to what it should be, and make sure the timestamp is regenerated. :)
Now if you really wanted it to be even less work, writing a plugin for this purpose is also possible. :)

Re: Article status - Draft, hidden, pending, etc...
I have been using TXP to publish my pages for about 8 months and I had never suspected the existence of the ‘Text’, ‘Html’ and ‘Preview’ tabs until I read this thread. I have checked the txp_img folder online and compared with the copy I have on my desktop and both contain the right images (‘textup.gif’, ‘textdown.gif’, ect) and even re-uploaded all of them to be sure, but I still fail to see these 3 tabs alongside my entry window in Opera, Firefox and IE.
I use the version 4.0.3 and the bas_img_sel and rss_admin_show_adv_opts plugins, if that helps, although deactivating them does not change anything.
What could be wrong ?

If you navigate to /textpattern/txp_img/, do you see htmlup.gif, htmldown.gif, previewdown.gif, etc.? Also, have you tried re-uploading the CSS file from a clean install?

Re: Article status - Draft, hidden, pending, etc...
I see all these images, jm. I also re-downloaded a fresh, unopened TXP package and re-uploaded textpattern.css in my install, but to no avail.

Does this show up in the HTML for the write page:
<pre>
<td valign="top" style="width:400px"><textarea style="width:400px;height:420px" rows="1" cols="1" name="Body" tabindex="2"></textarea><p>Excerpt <a target="_blank" href="http://rpc.textpattern.com/help/?item=excerpt&#38;lang=en" onclick="window.open(this.href, ‘popupwindow’, ‘width=400,height=400,scrollbars,resizable’); return false;" class="pophelp">?</a><br /><textarea style="width:400px;height:50px" rows="1" cols="1" name="Excerpt" tabindex="3"></textarea></p><input type="hidden" name="from_view" value="text" /></td><td valign="top" align="left" width="20"><img src="txp_img/textup.gif" height="100" width="19" alt="" /><img src="txp_img/htmldown.gif" onclick="document.article.view.value=‘html’; document.article.submit(); return false;" height="100" width="19" alt="" /><img src="txp_img/previewdown.gif" onclick="document.article.view.value=‘preview’; document.article.submit(); return false;" height="100" width="19" alt="" /></td>
</pre>
Hopefully that section won’t be there, then you can just update the PHP files. If it does, then I have no idea. Not that this is relevant, but have you ever edited your database?

My mistake, I don’t think it shows. How do I edit my PHP files, jm ?
