Site Organization Question (categories, main page, etc.)
So far, I’ve only used Textpattern for mostly static sites, and since I’m using it to implement a blog this time…I’ve been a little muddled about things. I hope someone can shed a light on how best to go about doing this. Please bear with me while I cover the minor basics of the site I’m working on- it’s a pretty simple and straightforward site with blog, I think?
Let’s see, there are currently sections: blog, updates, websites, downloads, and about.
“About” is a static section that consists of pages related to the site, like about me, the site, faq page, etc. (Will not be shown on the front page)
“Blog” is pretty self-explanatory and “Updates” just consist of posts made that are solely about updates made to the site and such. (Entries should show on the front page by default)
“Websites” and “Downloads” are both sections in this site that will offer other regularly updated content…except I do NOT want those entries to show up on the front page.
I realize that I can just choose for “Websites” and “Downloads” sections to not show on the front page. However, that gives me an immediate problem when it comes to showing articles by category from one of these two sections. For example, if I have a category called “brushes” that’s in the Downloads section- then when viewing the category like www.mysite.com/category/brushes, it will end up displaying a blank page because the section is currently set to not show on the front page.
From my understanding, category pages like the URL I mentioned typically uses the default page to display it, correct? If we’re forced to use the default page to display the category pages, how do I get the categories under the “Websites” and “Downloads” section to show in my case?
I did try to fiddle around and allow “Websites” and “Downloads” to show on front page, but then the article ends up displaying on the front page by default— which is something I do not want. However, the article tag is really limited in usage and we can’t really display articles specified by sections. So something ends up clashing somewhere, and I keep thinking this must be easy to fix…except I can’t seem to figure it out. I’m wondering if I’m thinking about this the wrong way or something.
Can someone help? How do you organize your site when it comes to something like this?

Re: Site Organization Question (categories, main page, etc.)
You might find it is solved by entering the URL as www.mysite.com/downloads/?c=brushes
That should show you all articles in section download with category=brushes (when using the normal context-sensitive txp:article). Then all you need is make your links to the relevant categories include the section. Several of the category list plug-ins (see textpattern.org) will build category menu lists with the correct section url.
Re your other question: article_custom will list articles from a specific section. You may find you don’t need it if the above url structure works for you.
