Photographer portfolio

A simple portfolio for a friend – the pictures are cool, mainly portraits. Please take a look.

Re: Photographer portfolio

very nice site merc and great evocative portraits too – nice how they tell different stories. I like the colour-switcher idea too.

Two small things:
  • the arrows confused me slightly as you can’t actually click on them. Perhaps make them part of the link and only on one side (outside) of the link.
  • the menu is slightly wider than the box on my firefox 1.5/win so that the line breaks at contact | me, i.e. only “me” on a new line.

Re: Photographer portfolio

merc,

i agree with jacob. the navigation is confusing. F. e. if you click on an image users in general expect the fotos pop up in a bigger size. On your page it calls the next image. But that is not obvious currently. The arrows confuse indeed. Why not add an arrow pointing to the left and one pointing to the right?

Second: don´t forget not all visitors to Jonathans page are english/american. If they are of another nationality and speaking another language the navi is really not intiutive. I can tell as i am german :).

In Opera 9 the first img of Alicia is not loading.

Nevertheless a fine website!

Are you from ‘level’?

Re: Photographer portfolio

Thanks alexandra, comments much appreciated.

I’m aware of user expectation and take your point but I’m only going to make it how JW wants it at the end of the day. The previous incarnation of the site just had back and next links, maybe we will go back to that depending if enough people reckon it is confusing how it is now. My wife was confused and now you so….

I think alot of portfolios and photoblogs go to the next image if it is clickable, I’d expext a bigger image if it were just a thumbnail. (maybe I need to put a tooltip thingy in).

Is that opera on win or mac?

Yup, I am from level.

Re: Photographer portfolio

That’s a very nice site you’ve designed. I really like the Portfolio image switcher and would be very interested to know how you did it.

I have some small niggles though.

The white background where the photos are looks out of place, I would be tempted to make this the same as the background to blend in better with the rest of the site.

I kept expecting the photos on the left hand side above the < Back link to take me back and the images on the right above the Next > link to take forward. It took me a little time to work out what was going on. My first thought was clicking the images would load a high resolution copy, especially as the first Alicia Keys image was quite small.

I know you probably weren’t designing for this but I would love to see some thumbnails for each portfolio. The thought of having to click through each image every time to find what I’m looking for doesn’t appeal to me.

All in all though a very nicely done website.

Re: Photographer portfolio

Thanks Algaris. Do you mean the background switcher? That was on the previous version of the site and I think I used one of alistaparts tutorials for that.

Each page only loads one jpg, but sometimes JW will compose two images on the one jpg, so while it could work like lightbox with a back and next overlay, what he’s got meets his budget nicely :) I put a title attribute on it explaining to click for next so hopefully that is cleared up now.

There’s a shot list with the entire portfolios contents, and the search brings up a thumbnail. Loading 200 thumbnails would suck and photo editors are probably only going to flick through part of each portfolio to decide whether to hire him or not, rather than searching for a specific image to license from him. Magazines nearly always want new pictures.

Re: Photographer portfolio

It makes a lot more sense now with the title attribute on the images. I also understant the design choice regarding thumbnails now. Thanks for explaining.

Ah perhaps I could have explained better. I’m interested in the links on the front page (portraits, stories and sketches), where when you hover over them they slide in a new image to represent that portfolio.
