r1805: Headings & Titles

Just doing a look at all the Headings and Titles in the admin area.

Running Textpattern version: 4.0.3 (r1805)
Language: English (US) 2006-08-22 13:44

Advanced Preferences:
  • image
    • thumb_w
    • thumb_h
    • thumb_crop
  • link
Plugins:
  • modified
Category headings are not consistent:
  • Images
    • Category
  • Files
    • File Category
  • Links
    • Link category

Dates for Articles, Images, Links and Comments are either one or two lines. Two lines look good in detail mode and one line of course when detail mode is turned off.

I’m open to suggestion on what the new column widths should be. See txp_log.php, txp_list.php and txp_discuss.php, and look for lines like this:

					n.td(
   safe_strftime('%d %b %Y %I:%M:%S %p', $log_uTime)
, 85).

85 is the width for that column. No number means no fixed width.

It may be the column widths, it’s just that they either display like:

08 Sep 2006 01:04 PM

or this:

20 Jul 2005
12:54 PM

Let’s take the Articles tab, the date could be on 2 lines when in detail mode and on a single line when in non-detail mode. On the Links tab, where there’s ample room, it’s on two lines. On the Comments tab, where more often than not a comment will occupy two lines anyway, the date is on one line making the display rather long.

Maybe I’m just nitpicking, maybe I’m counting pixels but it’s just my observation.

Re: r1805: Headings & Titles

Locking the width is not really a solution. Remember that width applied to a table-cell is more like minimum-width than width; browsers will expand the cell if needed. And they all behave differently. It depends also on the width of browser-window, user’s font-size, etc.
The addition of the soft-wrapping code in r1830 helps here

A small addition to the stylesheet:
#list th {white-space:nowrap;}
will prevent the wrapping of longer headers or headers that contain multiple words to wrap. I’m thinking: Comments Pane: E-mail, Website, IP and Articles Pane : Category 1, Category 2.
It also matters in case of Japanese or other CJK languages, where words can break at any character.

Having (forcing ?) the timestamp on two lines (date – time) will probably help getting a consistent behaviour.

Yes, I know that the date wraps inconsistently sometimes. If you’d like it to be changed, please suggest new column width values or other changes. Those are the best I was able to come up with.

I’m not sure that nowrap is very helpful, since long lines have to be dealt with somehow. The table needs to be a fixed width in order for the Detail checkbox to be useful.

something like, in txp_list.php (Articles pane) ?

td(
						safe_strftime('%d %b %Y', $posted).br.safe_strftime('%I:%M %p', $posted)
					).

(the date breaks anyway, on my side, when all details are shown)

The #list th {white-space:nowrap} is only for the headings, and only for some cases where wrapping may happen. Otherwise, it will have no effect on the table. See it as an emergency case if you want.

Re: r1805: Headings & Titles

Since 4.0.4 is about to come out (r1886).

Using: English (US) 2006-10-03 19:58

Advanced Preferences
  • Comments
    • Require user’ name?
  • image
    • thumb_w
    • thumb_h
    • thumb_crop
  • link
  • Publish
    • title_no_widow

PS. In the first post I mentioned category headings, I think they should just all just say Category, saves space.

The only thing out of place are the image thumb labels and the modified header in plugins.

Looking really good at r1916.

Re: r1805: Headings & Titles

Nils and I discovered that thumb_w, thumb_h, thumb_crop should not be translated, as they are supposed to be hidden preferences.

Just fixed the plugin one up.

Re: r1805: Headings & Titles

r1917, plugin ok.

Then should the thumb options appear in advanced preferences since they are in the edit image screen and are saved between sessions?

Re: r1805: Headings & Titles

These prefs shouldn’t appear anywhere, because their sole purpose is to pre-populate the thumb options in images based on what you last used; if they appeared in the prefs, they’d be confusing because they may change “unexpectedly”. For most everyone else, they have been/are hidden, which is why I couldn’t figure out what you/Nils were talking about at first. I don’t know why they started showing up for you guys, just that they shouldn’t be. ?

Re: r1805: Headings & Titles

Mary, I did a fresh install of r1917 on my laptop.

The image_thumb preferences do not appear, must be something with myself and Nils updating from SVN on a regular basis. I’ll have to look and see how I can get rid of it.
