Monthly/Yearly Archives... are they really worth having?

I dont think I have once used this feature on any site or blog I have visited. 10 times out of 10 I browse by category..gets me to the info I want a lot faster. I been asking around and not one person I know actually browses archives by dates. I know this is supposed to be an uber-cool, must-have feature, but I am reconsidering the value of it on my projects because no one seems to use it… ever

what do yall think?

I think it can be useful if the site is extremely busy and generates a lot of articles rather than a simple page that list everything. That said, category based archives are more useful. I can see using it as an optional page but not just a list on the front page as seems to be the the common default.

From TXP Mag stats i can tell, noone browses the archive. I am the lonely only browser there. Usually i look up an article i once did publish but that s about it.

Re: Monthly/Yearly Archives... are they really worth having?

I’ve had the same experience with archives as Alex but let me tell you that the search spiders love them.

Most of the hits on hcgtv come from searches resulting in one of my archive pages being displayed in the search results. Since my archive pages actually lists all of the article’s contents, instead of being a one liner with the title, seaching for Celebrity Name Naked would result in one of my archive pages to show up. Even though the celebrity name and the naked are on two different articles, Google treats the page as one big spider’s fest.

Excuse the Naked example but that’s the nature of the web today, dirty minds we all have.

Actually, monthly/yearly archives can be useful for corporate or organizational PR or news release areas—especially when such posts are pretty irregular. Also, sometimes people just want to peruse rather than search on specific criteria.
