r1785 - Save button above fold

I’ve thought of suggesting this before, my scroll wheel likes it ;)

Should we apply the same thinking to other areas like presentation?

Re: r1785 - Save button above fold

I don’t really like it.
And it is still below the fold, in my browser (non-maximized, thank you).

And, more important, I think it is rather poor UI: a submit button dropped in the middle of the form.

Re: r1785 - Save button above fold

Philippe, where would you place it then?

I just like that I don’t have to scroll down to click the button.

Yes, that’s why this is tentative (the checkin-message says that we may back this out again before a release). I would really like to get more feedback from more people on this.

On the widely used screensizes of 1024×768 it is not possible to get the publish button above the fold even when maximizing the window (same goes for 1280×800). This IMHO is a really problem/annoyance (I post blurbs/links several times a day, and couldn’t put up with this). The current way (publish/save above timestamp), moves the publish button above the fold even when the window is not maximized on those resolutions. It just has to have a certain size.

Decision is anything but final, so I am looking forward to more opinions.

Re: r1785 - Save button above fold

Well, for me, the publish button is above the fold currently.

But to be honest, I think that putting it in the middle of that side column, as it is right now, is somewhat awkward. I don’t know whether it would work out at all, but possibly moving the button to the top of that side column, like above the status box, would be less awkward? I’m not sure, but I just feel that sitting between the comments and the timestamp is kind of awkward.

Re: r1785 - Save button above fold

For me, on a 1024×768 screen it was above the fold even in the old situation (F11, full screen).
Having it in the middle of the column doesn’t look good (IMHO) and is not consistent with the position of the save buttons on other screens.

Just a thought: reduce the height of the main article textarea, let ‘excerpt’ be a link that unhides the excerpt textarea, which would hidden by default (similar to the links on the left) and put the Save button in the middle column, below the textareas.

yes, full-screen, but not with a maximized window. How many people actually use F11/full screen on a day to day basis?

be a link that unhides the excerpt textarea, which would hidden by default

We could do that to the lower half of the timestamp window (the second paragraph). It buys enough space to push the button above the fold, and I think manually editing the date is something that’s used less than anything else on the page on a regular basis. Just an idea…

You’re talking about hiding the time row (hours, mins, secs)? I think that’s a great idea. Personally, I don’t think that putting the publish button in the center column is a good idea, but that’s just me. I think that your idea is great.

Re: r1785 - Save button above fold

In that case, I wouldn’t mind seeing all timestamp and comments options hidden by default.
Because in a normal browser window, the last line of text I see in the right column is “…or publish at” (save button below timestamp).
This is in Firefox, with a row of tabs, the standard navigation toolbar and the webdeveloper toolbar (but no bookmarks toolbar) in a 1024×768 screen.

Oh, well, and if it doesn’t match my clients preferences, it’s probably not that hard to write an admin-side plugin that fixes it ;)

Re: r1785 - Save button above fold

Assuming that moving the submit button before the Timestamp will keep it in view is false. The user doesn’t necessarily has the window stretched full height, has extra toolbars, etc. Don’t assume either that the user has the same font-size (it is well known on this board that the 11px/10px font-size in the textpattern.css stylesheet is unreadable for me. I’m not alone in that).

My browser is set to use a minimum font-size of 12px, my textpattern.css uses 14px as base font-size. And the content area of my browser is rarely taller than 650px.

Has anyone noticed that the submit button has a tabindex of 4 set ?
Title field is set to 1, Body textarea is 2, Excerpt is 3. For quick access, just use the tab key…
(and if you worry about your scroll wheel, use the page down key on your keyboard :-).

Personally, I vote for putting it back where it was.

Hiding the ‘details’ part in the Comment (Invitation) and Timestamp (publish at) fieldsets would probably be a better way to save space. Those fields are not used that often, I think. That would even have that button in view on my side, when the ‘tabs’ are out of scroll view.
(hiding the ‘Excerpt’ area is not a good idea, for keyboard access reasons alone. At least not by default).

Re: r1785 - Save button above fold

For what it’s worth, there’s more than one application out there where the publish/submit/save button is in two places on the page … at the top of the form, and at the bottom of it, too. I imagine there’s some UI “rule” that says that is “bad,” but it sure works for me.

Re: r1785 - Save button above fold

What about placing it above the Status fieldset? Still above the fold for some folks under some situations, but looks a little less out of place. ?

I wonder if we shouldn’t move it back though, and instead let people use a plugin to move the button elsewhere on the page. ?

I’d find that more confusing, having the two buttons. But again, a plugin could do that for you too, if you so desired.
