Membership Directory

I’m looking to use Txp to administrate a moderate sized organization’s website. One of the sections will be a member’s directory. Does anyone know of a good way to administrate a membership directory that can display a number of names, emails, and addresses by the letter or be searched? I’ve looked around without much luck, but I’m thinking there might be a good plug-in or mod that could make this an easy task. Thanks much.

Re: Membership Directory

i believe that the name for a MEMBER in textpattern is AUTHOR.

Re: Membership Directory

Sorry, I was a little vague when I posted the original post. The “members” are members of the organization, not users of the CMS or authors. The directory would be moderated by an administrator of Txp, or someone at the organization.

I basically want a script that could list a number of miniature profiles of people that belong to the organization and not require the use of formatting or html code in the article.

Re: Membership Directory

Why not make each member an article?

Re: Membership Directory

There are about 200 members at the moment. It would be possible, but it may be burdensome to organize all of the articles along with the other content of the website.

Know of any plug-ins that would help separate out the membership articles from the non-membership articles?

Re: Membership Directory

No, I don’t think there is such a plugin. If you put all ‘member’ articles in a separate section, you can sort the article list in the articles tab by section, that’s the only way to get an overview as far as I know. Using articles is also the best way of making the members list searchable I think.
You could always make a plugin request.

Re: Membership Directory

Probably the easiest way is simply to make an article per member, then output the list of members or member profiles using the normal txp article list tags with a form to show each entry as you want them displayed? That way you can control the output as you want it in terms of sort order, which information to show or whatever. It doesn’t need a special script just txp.
For organisations sake you might want to put all members in their own subsection. You could then give each member of the organisation their own ‘membership card’ on the organisation’s homepage, i.e. they each get their own url domain.tld/member/name-or-number. It’s just a bit boring to add them all manually if your organisation has lots of members. Note: editing has to be done be the admin, not by the member themselves.

Alternatively if you need to store only very little information, and have a picture of each and every member, you could also use the image plus the caption and description fields. I’ve done this before to show the members of an organisation’s board, where all I needed was the photo, the name and role/responsibility area per person.

EDIT: you all got there first.

There are ways of populating the database manually using SQL. With the necessary knowledge you could populate the 200 articles in one go from your excel list of members. That would not be a txp plugin, though, just a quick start to save you entering the data by hand.

Re: Membership Directory

jakob,

thank you for the notes. I think I’ll give that a try and see what results.
