prevent comment spams
Hi there,
I changed to TXP from MT due to the large volume of comment spams I got. And my weblog has been worked fine for 2 years.
But recently I began to receive comment spams too. Could someone help me with this problem?
I am still using version 1.0rc1. Is there any plug-in I should add or should I have to update to current version?
(I made many changes that I couldn’t remember. So I prefer not to update considering version 1.0rc1 works fine with me except for the spams).
Thank you so much for your input!

Re: prevent comment spams
Hi,
I’ve turned on Moderate comments and Mail comments to author? in preferences. I get an email when a comment is received on one of my sites, then I either make it visible or delete it.
There are spam plugins but they may not work with your version of Textpattern, but you could give them a try. I couldn’t recommend one because I haven’t had a chance to try them.

Re: prevent comment spams
It’s not advisable to continue using pre-release software, particularly when combatting spam and other security problems is a pro-active thing, not something you can achieve once and forever.

Thank you hcgtv & Mary~
I did that (turned on Moderate comments and Mail comments to author?). But there were so many spams, and it is not applicable to delete or make it visible one by one…
I guess I will try to update to the newest version and see what happens…
Is that true if I use the current version and there won’t be spams? Can anyone confirm this? Thanks!

feiliao:
like you I switched from MT nearly two years ago because of the comment spam issue… and like you, I’ve only just started getting them again.
However, unlike you I am on 4.03 (with the asy_stopdude, and mrw_spamkeywords_urlcount plugins), and I can confirm that none of the comment spams posted have appeared publicly on my site. The spammer can post them, but TXP recognises them as Spam and does not show them.
Well worth spending the time to upgrade to 4.03 (although 4.04 is arriving in the not too distant future if you can wait).

Hi feiliao, please consider updating your site to latest stable release as soon as possible. As you can see from the changelog in the download (and by reading the older anouncement, given how far back this goes) there have been plenty of improvements wrt to comment spam (as well as bugfixes and security fixes/improvements).
You are putting yourself and other people at risk by running way outdated software on a publicly accessible server – and this is generally valid advice, not specifically textpattern-related.

Re: prevent comment spams
Enabling preview usually stops 95% of spam as the spambots don’t usually bother with previewed sites and if you mdoerate you can stop 100% of it reaching your site. You still need to filter it manually, which for a busy site could get tedious I suppose – I don’t have that problem :(
You could implement a CAPTCHA system. It has shortcomings too, in that it makes it hard for some visually impaired users and screen reading software, but adds another layer for the spammers to worrk through. Or some other reverse-Turing test.

There’s a ready to use Captcha plugin available as well (see Textbook entry on combatting spam) – it works only for 4.0.3 and up.

Sencer, Thanks for your suggestion. I have updated my txp to the lastest one. The whole update and troubleshooting only cost me half hour. It’s really brilliant! Also thanks for mentioning Captcha plugin (A million thank you to NyteOwl too), I tried it. Very nice! Even myself have some trouble to recognize those letters/numbers, let alone the spamers! :D
dubh, thanks for the confirmation. I installed mrw_spamkeywords_urlcount, but couldn’t find asy_stopdude. But anyway, I will see how it goes.
NyteOwl, my site is not busy. :( But some spamers made their points to attack it… No taste at all. :P
Again, you guys are so nice! Appreciate all the prompt and efficient help!!!
