Textpattern or (another) CMS?
What I have in mind for my site is more complicated than a blog – can textpattern do all of this (or most of it) or do I need to go with a CMS solution? I’m also looking at drupal/joomla/php-fusion.
- every page displays a login/register form (unless you’re already logged in)
- comments on most pages (including “static” pages) can be left by logged in users, or guests (hopefully using captcha)
- sections, subsections, and maybe sub-sub-sections (arbitrary level nesting?)
- a forum module, or integrating with a forum package (simple machines, etc)
I’m not looking for a step by step guide for all of this (but feel free to go into detail), just trying to figure out if txp’s right for me.

A CMS doesn’t require users to sign on, that’s more a function of a Blog where you have members.
Sections can be handled by multi-blogs and sub-sections by categories.
Forums have to be bridged in, usually by developers with interest.

Thanks, but could you also explain why it’s so hilarious?
It’s not like I asked about blogging software vs. MIDI music editors or something.

Well, you can blame our friends at http://www.opensourcecms.com/ .
I looked at all the projects there ( http://www.opensourcecms.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=388&Itemid=160 ) and it lists dozens of CMSs. Textpattern is listed in the blog section. So I’m not as stupid as I look – I was just misled.
You’d be happy to know that txp is the highest-rated blog/CMS software there.

Our friends at OSCMS need a new classification system, brought up many times before by me and on their forums. There are way too many projects grouped under CMS that are Portals or just glorified Blogs.
I’ve started grouping projects a bit better over at PHPXref, eventually I’ll sub categorize them even further.

CMS stands for Content Management System. Anything that manages general content can be considered a CMS. Under “CMS”, you’ll find specialized categories for “Portal”, “Blog”, etc. Textpattern is more of a general-purpose CMS, whereas something like Drupal is a portal/“community” software. Textpattern will never be a Drupal – that’s not it’s focus or goal.
Some people want something in-between, so they’ll use plugins and/or modifications of core files to bring in some portal-like qualities to Textpattern. If a community-based site is your goal, Drupal is what I would recommend.
