Wetland resources and information site

This is my first textile website for a wetland resources and information website that can be viewed here. I have used it more as a CMS than a typical blog

I have previously used a range of .asp and .asp.net CMS solutions but was attracted to textpattern by its standards compliance and the flexibility that the huge plug-in and community support provided. I will definitely use it again.

Re: Wetland resources and information site

This is good. Love the overall design — super clean and the content is well-written. One thing I noticed: your footer could use some work. First, the link to Digital Evolution doesn’t work (you forgot the “http://” in the a tag). Second, the copyright only needs either the word “copyright” or the © symbol, not both. Third, there is no need to separate these two pieces with a string of non-breaking space characters. This could easily be accomplished with CSS. For instance, your HTML might look like this:

<code>
<div id=“footer”> <ul> <li class=“wetlandlink”>Copyright 2006 <a href=“http://www.wetlandlink.com.au”>Wetland<em>Link</em></a></li> <li class=“digevlink”>Site: <a href=“http://www.digitalevolution.com.au”>Digital Evolution</a></li> </ul>
</div>
</code>

And your CSS might look like this:

<code>
#footer ul { overflow: auto; /* clears the floats */ width: 100%; /* required for stupid IE to not break the overflow */ list-style: none; }
#footer ul li.wetlandlink { float: left; width: 200px; (you might need to adjust that number) margin-left: 10px; }
#footer ul li.digevlink { float: right; width: 200px; (again, adjust accordingly) margin-right: 10px; }
</code>

This is of course written off the top of my head, so it may or may not work. But I think it will. :)

Hi dododi,

It looks great! One thing that I noticed (i know I’m in the U.S. but,) the site is loading very slow on my cable connection. I have had great success with asy_jpcache plugin for site caching you may find benefit. Other than that the site looks great.

Re: Wetland resources and information site

Thanks KevinPotts and SoulShip for your comments.

I have fixed the errors you have identified. Kevin, I wil have a play with your css suggestion when I get a chance.

Soulship, in regards to the speed, on the day in question my msql server self destructed and was causing some serious issues. I would be interested to find out if it is still slow. As it quite quick here is Australia. I will however, out the link for asy_jpcache.

Thanks again.

Re: Wetland resources and information site

Nice job indeed (as a fellow Oz-dweller).
Can you tell me what software you used for the quick poll?

Cheers

Same question here: Can you tell me what software you used for the quick poll?

Other than that: nice site :)

Re: Wetland resources and information site

Dododi

congratulations on putting together such a beautiful site for your first textpattern exposure!

However, I was a little confused by the way you decided to colour the links.

For example, looking at the articles page, I can’t tell which titles, sub-titles or lines are hyperlinks just by looking at the page, it takes a little bit of exploring with the mouse to sort it out. The main heading is green and is not a hyper. The sub-headings are blue and not hyperlinks, the sub-sub-headings (article titles?) are green and are hyperlinks, links embedded in the excerpt/article are blue, there is a blue “more” button under each excerpt that is obviously a link, and finally the right hand column has a list, each as a blue hyperlink.

Having said that, it really doesn’t take long to figure out by watching for visual clues from moving the mouse around.

Nice work!
