Site search woes

<a href=“http://www.kentuckygolfing.com”>Kentucky Golfing</a> is my site.

You can see under “recent posts” that I’ve one one article on there now, which is a golf course in Kentucky. I’m just using this one as an example, but I’ve noticed that there really isn’t much rhyme nor reason to the search results (maybe I’m wrong?).

If you do the test for my site, with “A.J. Jolly Golf Course” you’ll see what I mean. Try these searches:

1. “aj jolly” – You will see that you get no results for that search term.

2. “aj” – You will see that you get results. The course listing shows up.

How does the search recognize “aj” but it does not recognize “aj jolly”? Seems weird to me.

Another you can try to see what I mean is:

1. “aj jolly golf course” (which is the title of the article) – and nothing comes up in the results

2. “a.j. jolly golf course” – and you will see that the course listing comes up.

I don’t understand the differences really in these or how it picks and chooses what keywords that it recognizes and doesn’t? Can someone explain this to me so I can better write my article titles so that they are easily searched by my visitors?

Re: Site search woes

As I understand it, the built in search uses regular expressions as its search methodology rather than using keywords and boolean operators.

aj isn’t the same as a.j. and the more words you add to the search, the more specific the search results will be, which is why aj returns results but aj jolly doesn’t. Similarly for the longer title.

BTW you have some script code spilling into the front page of the site.

Re: Site search woes

Hey, thanks for the reply. Yeah I know about the code. That code is there from wet_thumbfilter (which I’m in the process of trying to figure out why it doesn’t work with the guy that made the plugin).

I think I might have found an answer to what I’m wanting to do here: <a href=“http://forum.textpattern.com/viewtopic.php?id=18208”>http://forum.textpattern.com/viewtopic.php?id=18208</a> Don’t you think?

Re: Site search woes

NyteOwl. I folled the directions in that thread that I asked about and it seems to work now as I would like. You can type “aj jolly” and get results or really any combination that I’ve tried for that mater. It was a quick fix for just changing one line of code.
