I've seen txp's password protect tag, but...

I’m wondering if I password protect a section of my site, does textpattern have a way for people without a password to apply/sign-up for one? The sites I’ve seen using the txp password protect function, have a “username” and “password” input box on the site, but no where to “register” or “sign-up” or anything like that. Is that functionality still in the making or am I missing it?

Re: I've seen txp's password protect tag, but...

Textpattern’s own password-protection tag does not work on a per-user/useraccount basis, so what you suggest would not fit the existing tags. Instead the current tags work on a “per-use” basis: when you place the tag in your templates/articles you set the user/pasword as an attribute for the tag. So the use-case for the currently available tag is quite different from what you seem to have in mind.

Re: I've seen txp's password protect tag, but...

So essentially, if I use the password protect for a section of my site, if I want people to be able to access it, I’ll just need to tell them what the user/pass is?

Alternatively, you can use ign_passsword_protect and create your own signup mechanism.

Thanks Mary. I don’t see anything on that link about a signup mechanism though? Or were you just saying that it IS possible, not that the plugin acutally has the capability built in?

Re: I've seen txp's password protect tag, but...

The plugin allows you to use a custom database table (named “ign_users”) to check against (“ign_usr_mgmt” tab under “extensions”). Hence, you could create a plugin to allow users to signup (or, you can simply add your users by hand with it), and then ign_password_protect can use it.

Re: I've seen txp's password protect tag, but...

Ok, so just to clarify for my own good (because I know I can’t create a plugin, as I’m no programmer at all). Essentially, all I would need to do is create some basic contact form, just as zem_contact asking for name, email, etc. I manually insert each person into the ign_users table and create a password for them, then email this information back to them. Wouldn’t all be automated and would be a little work on my part, but this would work right?

Yes.
