3 Column Fluid(ish) Layout

Hi guys!
Now, putting politics aside, I only built the site, and I cant say anything about the content!
The site is Cork Against War

This was my first time ever doing a 100% width, 3 column, tableless layout, and it was not easy! Particularly because I wanted the nice blue sidebar on the left, I had to be quite creative with it!
I also had to comprimise on the width, and put a min width of somewhere around 1000px.. but I think its almost there now! What do you think?

p.s. I dont know if I will be jumping at the chance to do a 3 column 100% width site again after that!!!

Re: 3 Column Fluid(ish) Layout

The site looks well presented to me, so congrats on getting the 100% width to work like you wanted it. I did not get to check it in IE, so how does it work there since the min-width is not supported by IE?

Re: 3 Column Fluid(ish) Layout

Its fine in IE (which took a while ;)), but I actually dont think I tested it at a small res screen size in IE.. hmm.. hopefully it would be ok! Im messing around with the banner.. its weird doing a banner for just the left, as the background is repeating.. it doesnt look right to my eye! The positioning of things isnt as straightforward as with fixed width..
I dont suppose you know aswell, is it only on the ‘articles’ section, front page, that all articles are shown, just because on the other pages, it seems to only show one article at a time, and the old one is turned into a link? Is that normal, or is there a setting for that?
I should be done then.. I found a WICKED flickr plugin, totally by accident, its so so cool
flickr plugin at work
Im really chuffed with that, and all of the other plugins around aswell, its exciting, you seem to be able to do so much more with textpattern than other cms’s (Ive tried them all!!!)
Thanks for the reply too!

Re: 3 Column Fluid(ish) Layout

In Firefox/Win, I get a considerable horizontal scroll bar. It looks like your width is about 1200px, and at a resolution of 1024×768 (which is about 50% of surfers these days), there’s a scroll bar.

In IE/Win at 1024×768, your right sidebar gets pushed to the bottom of the page.

I did not look into your code, but judging by appearances, it looks like your “min width” may need to be a bit smaller.

Re: 3 Column Fluid(ish) Layout

Hi there! Im afraid thats as small as I can go without it breaking!! I prefer having the scrollbar, than having the whole thing break! Dont suppose anyone knows a fix for min-width in IE off the top of their head at all??

Re: 3 Column Fluid(ish) Layout

IE doesn’t support min-width, so you have to use a little proprietary adjustment like:

<!—[if lte IE 6]>

<![endif]—>

Not sure about the math, but it works.

Re: 3 Column Fluid(ish) Layout

Going back and looking, I also get the rather long horizontal scroll in Firefox/Mac.

Re: 3 Column Fluid(ish) Layout

Nicely done design, I’d say the news text font is a tiny bit small, though maybe that’s because Firefox ignores DPI settings and I’m running at 1680×1050 on 15.4” LCD.

Hi Ireland :),
having lived in Skibberean (Co. Cork) for 2 years some time back, i am happy to welcome the first TXP driven site from Ireland. Well done Hilary. I added a thumb of it to the Sites Gallery by Cat.
All my love to all the stones over in this peaceful corner of the world.
