hang and blank page on reload with new install

Hey, just did a new install of textpattern on a new site I am working on, but have been having intermitant problems. Yesterday I was getting a bunch of database unavailable warnings. Today, the site seems to be working, but on (literally) every other page load I get a blank page (after a 10-20 sec hang). No warning or anything. HTML source is blank. No warnings in diagnostic. running 4.0.3 (r1643) with no plugins.

Disabling the .htaccess file had no effect. Stripping the page template to just a header made had no effect.

Textpattern is loaded on a sub-domain: http://on-screen.ca/beta. The main domain http://on-screen.ca loads every time without a hitch. Also, I can get the page to load in Safari every time (caching?) but not in Firefox or Camino. Oh, and yesterday, when I was getting the database unavailable warnings, the problems were effecting both the back and front end. Today, they are just effecting the back end.

The site is on a host I am unfamiliar with. I will probably drop them a line today, but wanted to get any thoughts from you all first.

From the debugging info in the page source:

In other words, Textpattern is running in 0.14 seconds from start to finish. Subsequent page loads are faster (0.02s), probably because there’s no DNS lookup required for logging.

DNS lookups are one possible cause. They might affect some users but not others. Try setting Logging to None (admin > prefs) and see if it makes a difference. If it does the trick, you can try Logging on with ‘Use DNS’ Off (advanced prefs).

Alex, Thanks for that. Logging was off, and setting DNS to off didn’t help.

I turned Firefox’s caching off, and everything cleared up. With the cache on, I still get a hang and blank page on every other reload. I haven’t had time to check it on other computers, but I will let you know what I find when I do..

Ah, it looks like you’re running a copy from svn, not the 4.0.3 release, correct?

Hmm.. indeed.

I was running version: 4.0.3 (r1643)

I must have grabbed the wrong version from my hard drive. Switched it with 4.0.3 (r1188) and all is well (and speedy) again. Is there a known problem with caching files with versions post 4.0.3? Much thanks.

Not a known problem, but caching is fairly new so there might be one.

Can you try r1730 or higher, and see if it causes the same problem?

just installed 1736 and the problem came back. Still literally every other page load. Running Firefox 1.5.0.6. Problem still goes away if I turn browser cache off. Let me know if you want me to run any tests, pass on server stats, etc.

Does the problem occur with Production Status set to Testing, or just Live? (admin > prefs)

Any chance you can run LiveHTTPHeaders and see what’s going on with Last-Modified dates and 200/304 responses?

http://on-screen.ca/beta is giving an error response now, is that the URL that’s exhibiting the problem?

Thanks. I can see it happening at that address too.

It could be something to do with keep-alive behaviour, but I’m not sure why. Can you post your diagnostics please?

Also, if your host allows you to access the Apache error_log, take a look and see if there are any errors corresponding with the times of the failed requests.
