Edit the 404 page

I’ve recently been using Textpattern for a site that’s gaining popularity and I’m noticing more and more hacking “attempts” (people trying to access PhpMyAdmin and random Joomla/Mambo URLs). I’d like to edit the 404 page and remove the textpattern logo at the bottom so any potential evil-doers won’t know what system I’m running, at least by going to an incorrect page. I’ve been searching for a while on 404 pages but I’m either getting results for real errors or things like “this article is old because txp now supports custom 404 pages,” yet I can’t seem to find where to edit them.

Thanks!

Re: Edit the 404 page

Check that you’ve got Textpattern 4.0.3. This (I think) is the version where custom error pages first saw the true light of day. Early versions had no such feature and people came up with all sorts of tips and hacks and things to get around that.

Now: log in to textpattern and go to the Presentation > Pages tab. In the list of pages available for editing you should see a page called “
error_default
”. Click on that name so you can edit it to your liking (and remove the poor carver who’s been very hard at work protecting your site from all those nasty spammers). If you’ve previously deleted
error_default
then you should be able to create a new page by the same name. If you’ve got the right version of Textpattern then it should work as intended.

While you’re looking for ideas for content on your shiny new error page, head over to the article on The Perfect 404 on alistapart.com .

Re: Edit the 404 page

If you have 4.0.3 you can also keep error_default as a default error page and create seperate error pages by number (ie error_403 error_404 etc) each with seperate content. Here’s an example
