Changing hosting providers and moving my site over...
I’m thinking about changing hosting providers and was wondering how I need to go about moving my site over to the new servers? I’m not sure how that works with the database and everything.

Deron,
What I usually do is backup the database with phpMyAdmin and ftp my site to my local machine.
Then on the new host, create a new database and populate it with the backed up database and ftp the site up.
As long as where you’re hosted and where you’re going are running similar MySQL database versions, you’ll be fine, there are little gotchas in going from 3.x or 4.0.x to 4.1.x and 5.1.x or the other way.
Things that might need changes:
/textpattern/config.php – database info, path info
admin section – Time Zone – Site URL – Temp folder – File Upload Path
That’s it, I’ve done it quite a few times and it gets easier every time :)

Thanks. Doesn’t sound to hard anyway…
So when you say that you “ftp my site to my local machine” do you simply mean you ftp the “textpattern” directory to your local machine?

There’s also a write-up at <a href=“http://textbook.textpattern.net/wiki/index.php?title=Moving_Installation_from_one_Host_to_Another”>TextBook</a>.

Re: Changing hosting providers and moving my site over...
I’m trying to backup txp right now, and I just want to make sure I’ve got everything I need to back it up. I was following this link: <a href=“http://textbook.textpattern.net/wiki/index.php?title=Moving_Installation_from_one_Host_to_Another”>http://textbook.textpattern.net/wiki/index.php?title=Moving_Installation_from_one_Host_to_Another</a>
and have my database backed up and everything but it was saying something about once you are ready to transfer files over via ftp to your new server, it says to upload the default config files and php files…but I’m not real sure where to find those files? Is that something that is in the /textpattern directory? If so, I’ve already backed that whole directory up also.
Thanks

You upload the files (all your Textpattern files) just as they are now, only changing the details in config.php and the admin prefs, to point to your new database and path details.

Re: Changing hosting providers and moving my site over...
Sorry, I should have specified. So, it’s just the config.php file and admin prefs in the textpattern directory, right? Reason I ask is because in the root folder I’ve also got a config.php and I wondered if I also needed it? I opened it and the contents didn’t make much sense to me.

In the root public folder, you should have:
- files (folder)
- images (folder)
- textpattern (folder)
- .htaccess
- index.php
- You upload all your Textpattern files – their “positions” on your new server as they were on your old one.
- Open /textpattern/config.php, and update the values.
- Login to the admin, go to the preferences, and update your site url and paths (images, files and tmp folder)

And in this case my “Textpattern files” are (folders, images, textpattern, .htaccess, index.php)?

Yes. Anything that came in the .zip/.tar file.
