Forum Re-Designed

I’ve created an alternative stylesheet for the forum in order to reduce clutter, remove dead space, improve consistency, improve usability and turn down the ‘wake up yellow’ ;) intensity.

Note: this is made for me, so may not suit your needs (e.g. I’ve removed international forum and search box on every page). However, I’m happy to tweak this to make it useful for as many as possible, so feel free to suggest / request.

For Firefox:
  1. install Stylish
  2. use Txp Forum 1cog style
For Opera (thanks alexandra):
  1. edit the above txt file to remove first two lines, last ‘}’ and save as CSS to your harddrive
  2. press F12
  3. click on ‘Edit site preferences…’
  4. select ‘Display’
  5. select CSS from (1)
  6. you may (I didn’t, alexandra did) need to re-start your PC for change to take effect

P.S. If someone with access could please add an ID to the ‘Forum Categories’ block, I’d be grateful. This is dead space for me and I’d like to remove it. TIA.

Re: Forum Re-Designed

Wow, it does look a lot cleaner.

I’ll mention this thread to Paul, he’s the one who works on the PunBB CSS.

Thanks for taking the time David.

Re: Forum Re-Designed

I prefer the muted aesthetics but not the smaller typeface on the topic pages :)

Re: Forum Re-Designed

w00t, David that looks just fabulous! To me it should be the general stylesheet. It´s so much more attractive than the current one.
Just one hint: the font could in deed be increase a little bit cause f. e. Opera renders fonts even smaller than FF does.

Re: Forum Re-Designed

I’m using it. Thanks, David.

The old colors never bothered me, but I do like the fewer page elements and I do like the smaller font.

At any rate, we can tweak it as needed so there shouldn’t be any debating about what’s too bright, too small, too salty, whatever.

There are some “ghost” background colors in the bottoms of post areas. Kind of a faded, orange cream color thats above and below the post utility links (Report, Edit, Quote, etc.).

Used to like smaller fonts till last week when I had to go and buy my first pair of glasses:)

Re: Forum Re-Designed

I’d like to drop in on the French forum once in a while. What selector do I need to unhide (the whole international block is fine if need be)?

Re: Forum Re-Designed

Thanks for compliments. :)

  • font size easily changed – just one location – “*{font-size:11px;”. Of course, it would be nice to allow forum users to select their preference of font size either by offering ‘small’, ‘medium’ and ‘large’ templates or by adding a cookie-based font size selector. Either of those would be easy to implement
  • alexandra, Opera renders font size the same for me on Windows. Are you on another OS?
  • ‘ghost backgrounds’ – thanks, Destry – I had noticed that. I’ll fix it up in a little while
  • to reinstate international block, remove ‘#idw5’

Re: Forum Re-Designed

@David
for Opera it´s fine setting font-size to px but if you use em/% it renders it usually smaller than f. e. FF does. I only had a look at your screenshots and did not apply the stylesheet to my Opera install yet. Will do that next week when i am back home.
However, your stylesheet should become the overall style and the current one should go to the box: ‘Styles of the 70ies’ :)

Re: Forum Re-Designed

Hi alexandra,

I’ve not had that problem with Opera – I use the ‘sane’ font sizing method: set body{font-size:76%;) and then use em on elements as required. That method also provides consistency across Windows / Mac.

I agree (surprisingly!), that this theme should be default, but last time I offered an alterntative forum theme it met with a chilly reception … so I’m not holding my breath this time. ;)

Re: Forum Re-Designed

‘ghost background’ fixed and a couple of other tweaks (mainly adding a background hint to poster info block) – see my original post for updated files.
